Ginger root is fresh ginger and that is the kind that is peeled and then minced and put into various foods. Mostly, Thai and Indian.
Ginger is the same thing but it is dried and turned into a powder and is used more for baking.
These are NOT to be used interchangable! If you use the fresh kind in baking it will create lumps and a weird flavor and if you use the powder kind in cooking it will not come out right either.
Lastly there is pickled ginger which is that pink stuff you get with sushi.

When people say "ginger root" they mean the literal root of the plant. That's what people peel, then mince, for cooking and baking purposes.
When people say "ginger" they usually mean the powdered stuff that's sold as a spice. It's made from the root and has the same taste, but requires a lot less work to use.
Do not substitute equal amounts of one for the other. The powdered stuff is stronger.

I agree with Maryn Bittner.
And I will let you in on a secret, ginger tea takes care of whoopin' caughs. The tea has to be made out of the ginger stem it self. You will find them in the vegetable section in the grocery stores.
Just cut off a small chunk of ginger, cut the chunk in 4 pieces and boil it in a small pot or coffee pot of water and drink it Med-Hot! It also calms big time coughs. All natural baby!!
