My four month old niece is getting baptized this weekend. My husband and I are unable to make the trip (his sister lives across the country) but we would like to send a gift. As he and I do not follow his sister's religious path, we felt it would be inappropriate to send a religious gift. People have suggested things like commemorative engraved silver cups (they seem kind of silly) or a gold cross necklace (jewelry on a baby is so weird!). Does anyone have any suggestions?

Money is an appropriate gift. Your in-laws can deposit the money in a savings account for your niece.

If that isn't your choice, you may want to send a music box. I am Godmother to several of my nieces. For their baptisms, I gave them a music box- it doesn't have to play religious music, maybe lullabies would be nice.

Clothing may also be o.k.

I have also seen very nice quilts and blankets given as baptism gifts. I think Things Remembered may be able to embroider your niece's name and baptism date onto the blanket. It may be kind of pricey, but it's practical and unique.

All good suggestions, and the gift sounds like a nice gesture. You should know though that Mormon baptisms aren't necessarily a gift-giving occasion. The child probably just turned eight, so they just got a bunch of birthday stuff. Just sayin', it's certainly appropriate for you to just show up if that's your preference. It's generally Sunday dress, which for Mormons is almost always dresses for ladies and dress pants with a white shirt and tie for guys. (But no one will care if you wear something different.)

That's a tough one. How about flowers? When my daughter was baptized the only people that gave her gifts were her godparents, my grandparents, and my parents. Nobody else attending was expected to give a gift. Who would WANT so many ridiculous religious engraved items anyway?? lol. A few is fine, but I don't think you need to get a gift.

Or money. I just remembered my husband's brother and my grandfather wrote checks which we invested in her future college fund.

consider something as simple as a gorgeous bouquet of flowers or a large, expensive fruit basket delivered to the house. it is a little too close to the date to get a monogrammed blanket with the baby's name and baptism date. don't get any jewelry, since that is a choking hazard for the baby. you could also consider money or a gift card for the parents.

I would only get a religious symbol if you and your husband are deeply religious. Aside from a children's bible as the religious gift, might I suggest a savings bond (the baby won't appreiciate anything at this point, but in 20 years..............)

Please!!! no jewelry on baby, it's a hazard!!! And it doesn't have to be a religious gift. You can always just send and outfit, shoes, an educational toy, or some books. I'm catholic and I rather not get gifts that are religious...

Silver is traditional, how about a silver picture frame that her parents can use to display a baby picture and later when she is adult she can take it to her own home.
Money is another good gift, maybe with a note to say you want to start contributing to her future college expenses.
