Options:
1. Get rid of the carpet.
2. Buy a Dyson and vacuum at least once a week until fleas are no longer spotted.
3. Use Advantage/ Frontline on your pets monthly or until fleas are no longer present (minimum two applications).
I recommend options 2 and 3. 2 because you need a good vacuum anyways for all the hair and dust.
Don't bother with flea powder or borate salt or any other crap you need to dump on your carpet, rub in, let sit and vacuum up. I tried flea powder on a portion of my carpet. It was nasty stuff. The powder was flying everywhere. The powder was vacuumed up with a vacuum but the carpet still felt like there was a lot of stuff imbedded. I bought a Dyson upright one week later and vacuumed up what looked like all the powder that was previously put into the carpet and then some.
After that experience, I decided to only vacuum, wash bedding and apply Advantage once a month for flea treatment and prevention.

I think the best thing to do is have your pet on Frontline Plus or Advantage monthly and then use a professional service to kill the fleas in the house. The Frontline or Advantage will stop the source of the fleas (on your animal) and a professional uses targeted, less toxic substances than the flea bombs that spew toxic stuff everywhere and still don't get all the nooks and crannies where fleas are. Also, professionals guarantee their work. Worth the money in my mind and it really isn't all that expensive for one or two treatments.

The best solution I've found is table salt. You sprinkle it on your carpet, sofa, etc., wait several hours, or overnight is even better, then vacuum. You will have to retreat in a week to get the fleas that are newly hatched. The concept is they eat the salt, get dehydrated and die. I've done it in four different residences and never had it fail.

The safest and cheapest method of getting rid of fleas is to use a mixture of boric acid and salt. Boric acid acts as a desiccant and dries out the exoskeleton of the flea, but does not have any side effect on human beings or animals.

Yeah, a proper spray. Not all of them are good. You can be fairly sure no treatment you buy in a store is going to work. I recommend Indorex, Acclaim, Staykil or Skoosh.
I wouldn't bother trying salt or Borax, it'll make a right mess and the fleas will be laughing at you!

You can buy different types of flea bombs. Make sure no animals are in the house for a couple of hours as the "bombs" are extremely strong.
You can buy these at Wal-Mart or any other general store.
