Everything is tested in light of God's Word, the Bible. If it contradicts, it is false. If it aligns, it may be of God, but still be wary. The Devil himself often appears as an angel of light, offering half truths.

1 John 4
Test the Spirits
1Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

It is all in context there. read verse two and three again. if what they say is compatible with that, then they're genuine.

Sold out years ago, good contract too. I gave him my soul in exchange for 5 bucks. Wasn't using my soul anyway, but really needed the money. And God certainly was not helping out at all, God would have waited until I starved to death, rather than lift a finger to help out. So either I starved to death (painfully) and therefore sold my soul to God or got the money I needed to get back on my feet and sold the soul to the devil. Seems to me Satan was much nicer.
Hey I could put that made up story along with the rest of them in the Bible. But FYI throughout the Bible, Satan does seem much nicer than God, why is that?

When John told us to test the spirits, I think that he was telling us to discern between right and wrong teachings, and between right and wrong ideas (even those in our own heads). God would not contradict himself, so any spirit that tries to get you to sin, or that denies a basic doctrine of the Bible, is an evil spirit.

I don't think that there is a test to see if someone is evil or not before you get to know him, if that is what you are asking.

The term: Kind and loving God, rules out God being a tyrant like Saddam Hussein which he would say: Do as I want and say or you will be sent to a place of despair and hopelessness.
. There can be NO Satan or Devil. Get over it!
My God has control and love. Does yours?

Are they abiding in the word of God? Living it? It all comes back to what the Bible says, what God's holy and living word says. If they are going about believing things that are NOT in line with scripture, they are not walking in the truth.

1 John 1:6
If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.

1 John 2:4
The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

Jesus didn't save the world, because we don't need saving. Am I the antichrist? Maybe...

If he denies that Jesus is Lord, that spirit is of the antichrist.

I don't mean merely saying "Jesus is Lord", I mean acknowledging the fullness of what this means.

Can't be done. Doesn't matter anyway, He'll know when judgment comes, doesn't matter if we know. Our opinons of other people's faith has no significance.
