is it safe? Everytime I apply for a job, they're like "Apply online" and I'm ohkay!! and I've been entering my SSS, how do I know if I'm safe?

So many negative answers. Sheesh.

So long as the website is secure by at least 128bit encryption, it should be perfectly safe for you to enter it. You're not required to supply your SSN, but refusing to do so can cause problems as your employer won't be able to deduct your income tax, make contributions to your SS and a plethora of other tax problems.

If you're unsure if the website is secure, look on the page for what looks like a padlock. It might be yellow in color. Let your cursor hover over it. Does a pop up (it's really small) box appear that says 128bit encryption? If so, the website is secure. The lock will either be at the bottom of your browser, or if you're using something later than IE6, it should show at the top, just to the right of the address line.

Good luck, hope you get the job!

In the past when I filled out applications, I always left my SS number out, with a note some place, "Will submit social security number at time of employment." Most employers understand this concern and have no problem with people not writing their number all over the place.

No. You should not have to put in your SS# to apply for any job. Don't do it anymore, and if a job requires you do that, then forget that job!

Phurface, you don't have to give your SS# when applying...they don't set up income tax, and W-2s when you apply...if your previous jobs have done that, you must have some weird crazy gift...cuz I've never applied to a job and the next page was my income tax information...

Look at the address, if it says https you should be safe. Don't look at the padlock at the bottom of the screen (that can be faked!).

If you have an option to not plug in your SSN, just leave it blank. They will ask for it later.....

No, companies usually don't have this posted as a requirement unless your filling out paperwork for verification and even at that time it's done once your at the job interview

I wouldn't give them your social security # unless they actually hire you. They shouldn't even be asking that if your just applying.

If the site is https:// rather than http:// you should be fine. The s on the end signifys that it is a secured site.

As long as it has a little "lock" on the bottom. That mean that the site is secured. :)

Hope this helps & good luck job hunting!
