I'd really like to have a male dog, but I get turned off when they sit and their genital sticks out.
Female dogs are good protectors, too. But I'd prefer a male dog only because I had more female than males before.

It doesn't matter what gender your dog is, your dog will be loyal to you as long as you are kind and gentle to them, but also a firm leader of the household. A female dog will be (in general) calmer and slightly easier to train, while a male dog will be spunkier. It is an old wives' tale (that hasn't been proven true or untrue) that female dogs tend to bond with the man of the house and male dogs bond with the lady. At the end of the day, none of these really matter, all that matters is what gender do you prefer. I've always owned male dogs, I just think they're goofier and more fun. But all of my friends have female dogs, who are great and total sweeties. The decision is up to you, and what will keep your dog from running away is based on how you treat them.

My female Doberman is plenty protective and I don't have to worry about her being overly protective. Males of this breed can get that way. I think protective tendencies depend on the breed, the bond with the family, and the sex of the dog. I tend to go for female dogs just because of the marking territory in my house is not an idea that sits well with me.

I have had 2 males and 2 females. I have a slight preference for males but not really sure why. I currently have a female - and she was nothing that i am usually attracted to in a dog except for her personality and that's what counts the most!

I prefer female dogs as long as they are spayed by 6 months, so you don't have to mess with the heat cycles. I love all dogs, but the males humping and lifting the leg kind of turns me off. I have mostly had females and find them to be just as good a watch dog as a male.

I vastly prefer males, I own 5 males and 1 female. I usually only have males and do not have a peeing problem, in fact my female pees in the house more than the 5 boys because she was never reliably housebroken as a youngster. My males have always been much more affectionate and want to be with me.

I don't really have a preference. I've had female dogs be just as protective as males, so that doesn't factor in. I have to admit, I do get cautious around males until I find out if they try to mark everything or not.

I prefer male dogs but apparently they are way more stubborn than females. Females are more eager to please, and from the ones I've been around are way more protective from the males. But then again most of my male dog experiences came from an extremely happy go lucky yellow lab!

I have only had male dogs. I would probably stick with them. Not for protection though as mine have always been under 20 lbs.
I wouldn't want to deal with the female/heat thing before she was spayed.
