Ok, lost isn't the correct term. They left it on the table in a room full of people and left for two minutes, and when they returned it was gone. Now he wants me to buy him another one, and I told him no. Am I wrong for that?

I didn't lose the iPod. I wasn't even there. The person who lost it is my brother. My original response was no, but he was looking at me like I was crazy so I posted the issue here because I wanted to see what other people thought about the situation.

you aren't wrong. it doesnt matter who took it...his ipod=his responsibility.
it doesnt atter if the easter bunny took it. he should have kept it in a better place and taken better care of it.
Dont give in. Then you will be spoiling and be a pushover and he will have no better knowledge of responsibility

Heck no. That is not your fault. He was careless with his stuff (an expensive item at that). You are in charge of watching your guests but you really can't predict what they will do. Next time he needs to be more careful. If I were you the only thing I would offer is to try to help him find it but I definitely wouldn't pay for it and he should feel dumb for even asking you to. Good luck.

If I lost someone else's iPod, I would buy them a new one. If they lost it themself, then they need to learn their lesson and be a little more careful with their possessions in the future.

I would NOT buy the person a new one.

You are so not wrong. My son left his on a bench and of course someone took it he asked for another one and I said no way. So he went to his dad and asked him he said yes and got him one which I am very angry w/him for...being divorced I guess my son thought it wouldn't hurt to play the broken home card.I took it away from him tho.

I would tell him "yea, I'll get right on that. You can expect it on the 3rd of Neverary."

You're not responible for his phone. As much as that thing cost, it would always be attached to me like an extra limb.

Who are you to this person? If you are their mother, then you could consider getting them a new one for christmas, but only if you planned to spend that much anyway, and it would replace any other gifts you had planned to get. If they are not your child, then no, it's not your problem.

Absolutely not. If it was not directly put in your responsbility such as "excuse me, would you mind watching this for me?" then it is not your problem. Don't buy him a new iPOD, not your fault.
