The pacifer? The bottle? I am a Grandmther, my children and Grandchildren were off the bottle at the age 12 to 13 months. I am writing about healthy babies only please. I do not like seeing 2-4 year olds with a bottle or pacifer. Some parents put soda, suger drinks in their child's bottle. I think that's awful

none of my kids would ever take a pacifier. by 1 year old they were all plenty capable of holding a sippy cup; i was afraid if i let them keep a bottle longer they would just get more and more attached. it was very easy to transition them at that age. i agree with you, it is disgusting to see these toddlers running around with pacifiers and bottles. good luck =)

My daughter was off the pacifier by 2 months. (she refused it) The bottle I got rid of at about 10 months b/c she decided she wanted a "big girl cup". She still uses the hard plastic "sippy cups" that are for the older kids (the Dora ones at Walmart) only so she doesn't spill it everywhere. She does use a regular glass with no lid at dinner or a straw when we go out. She'll be 2 in January.

As for the soda issue. I would have to agree. My husband will occasionally give her a sip of soda (which I hate) but good thing is that my daughter doesn't like the fizz in it. I think the only reason she wants some of it is b/c she thinks its tea. You should see the scrunched up face she gives her father when she realizes it isn't tea. If looks could kill LOL. My opinion is that as soon as a child can speak and clearly communicate their wishes, the pacifier should be gone. Whether that be 9/10 months, but definitely by 2.

My child never liked pacifers so I didn't have that problem. I stopped giving him the bottle at 1 and stopped all sippy cups at 2. He's now drinks out of a cup. My friend however took a different approach that I don't approve of. I believe it's cuz she'd rather be lazy and not deal with temper tantrums. Her daughter just turned 3 and she is still on bottle for nighttime and sippy in the day.
Everyone is different, but I think the bottle should be gone long before 3.

First of all with all of the info that is out there, I cannot believe that ANY parent would give their CHILD POP, in any form. Why do you (not the writer, but anyone who allows their child to have pop) feel that the child NEEDS the pop. Their is absolutly NO reason that a child of any age should be allowed to have pop- that's what flavored milk, juices and water is for!

Anyways- My oldest was off of the bottle at 18m and my youngest was off of it before she was 1 years old. My oldest hated to NUK but my youngest now 1 1/2 years LOVES her NUK. It is a total sercurity thing for her. As for when to wean from the "pacie" that depends on the child. Dr.'s say that they should be weaned by 4 years of age- as it have been proven that NUKs DO NOT cause the damage to the teeth and the jaw as it was once thought to have! Especially now that most NUKs are ortho made. I have no clue what I would do if my youngest didn't have her NUK.

It is also recommend that babies be introduced to sippie cups at around 6 months of age- and full weaned off of bottle (on on sippies) by 1 year. The bottle is so hard on the teeth- the better they can be weaned is for the better.

Bottles are for milk, ONLY. Anything else should be in a sippy cup, and even bottles should go away between 18mos and 2 years.

Pacifiers - At bedtime, I'm OK with it, but by the time they start talking, the pacifier needs to go too. It's hard enough understanding what they are trying to say without having a pacifier in the way!

My kids got rid of the pacifier and bottle at different ages.
My first lost the pacifier at 12 months. It was a tough few days but he adjusted. And the bottle at about 15 months, whenever he could hold a sippie cup well.
The second lost the pacifier at 24 months. He was much more attached and needed it to feel safe, we thought.
The bottle at around 18 months, his own decision.

It really depends on the child and how much screaming you can take. Over 2 you can actually hurt their jaw alignment and teeth structure.

Both my gurls didn't take a pacifer and my oldest was off the bottle at 1 in a half. And my 19 mth old is barely getting off the bottle.

Bottles should be replaced by sippy cups at a year and pacifiers stopped at about the same time. This is per the American Dental Assn and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Toddlers should never get soda. Ever.

My son was off the bottle by 1 year old and the pacifer took longer. I guess it was a security thing. I actually had to cut the nipple off the pacifer and tell him it was broken and couldn't use it anymore (Agh! Guilt) The pacifer was at 18 months.

My kids are 3 and 6 and never drunk soda and been out of bottles before they were 9 months and were drinking out of cups. Now my 3yr old daughther sucks her finger, but I'm ok with that because it's her comfort...I do hate the site of seeing kids drinking sodas or drinking bottles and walking or in there parents arms when they can walk ....
