What year did you first come? How long have you been here this time?

I am not looking for people that were born here or came as a result of a parent's decision, unless that led you to coming back on your own. I am curious about people that as an adult made a conscious decision to make Korea their destination.

I also don't care if you came to visit family since that has nothing to do with Korea. You would have visited the family no matter where they lived, even if it was NYC.

The reason I am so particular about who answers is that I am really curious about what draws people to Korea. If it is only family, then you were not actually drawn to Korea, you were drawn to family.
For me I was ordered here in 1999, but i fell in love with the place and went back to the US and attended school to learn Korean before returning in 2003.
And I still do not fully understand why I love it here. The negatives are numerous and easy to pick out... and yet I don't leave. I truly enjoy being here.

Xara... Seriously? True or not, that is a great story. I almost hope you are lying because I want a chance to talk to someone so creative.

Why do I want to stay here? Good question.
I don't know the answer.
Truthfully, when I am on my way back to KOrea after a few months away, (I just arrived last night after being in the US since september), I think, "oh no... why am I back?"
But hsi morning, I am writing this and looking out on Seoul station area ad thinking, "I love it here".
I feel so much more connected here than I do at "home"
We came here, originally, because my husband was transfered. MY daughter loves the school here and I love the people/friends.. maybe the excitement of "what will I see tomorrow?" because Seoul changes everyday. You can NEVER get bored here.
Koreans who live in Korea have a way about them.. I can't explain it, but I just kow, on the connector from Tokyo, who is Korean and who is not..
What am I already missing this moring?
Real, crusty whole grain bread and cheese for breakfast.. but I have the rice maker on and the garlic frying, so I am "home" again I guess.

I first came to Korea in 1996 and it was to teach English in a hagwon. I had just finished college and the economy in the U.S. was awful at that time. I always wanted to travel abroad so the timing seemed right. I narrowed my choices to Korea, Japan and Taiwan. I ultimately chose Korea because:

a: I thought I could make the most money there
b: my first girlfriend was Korean so I figured I'd have a chance to meet someone else like her there.

I ended up staying for about two years (I left when IMF hit).

I came back to Korea in 2005, after having done many things and traveled many places in the interim, and still live here today.

I agree with aggylu... Anyway, I live in the states and went to Korea in 2001 with my mother and sister to visit family we've never met before. I know you said you don't care if we visit family because we would visit them anyway, but we only saw them in a few old pictures.. The reason we couldn't meet my cousin was because he was adopted into another family here in the U.S.A and my mother lost in touch with his parents afterwards, which was before I was born. My cousin was actually the one who found his parents in Korea. It was a really emotional moment and I was glad to meet everyone again. (That was actually the last time I went to Korea so far.. the first time I went to Korea was when I was a baby.) We're thinking about having a family reunion in Korea soon.

I am travelling to Korea at the beg. of the year to teach english. I am attracted to Korea because my Korean friends' families are so warm and inviting. They always invite me to eat, tea, spa, etc. with them and to learn more about their culture. I am much more familiar with Japanese culture, having grown up with Japanese exchange students, so Korea is new and exciting to me. I cannot wait to travel all over Asia, but especially the temples, mountains, and restaurants of South Korea.

I came here because one day I was pondering my next travel escapade while I was at the zoo. Then I saw a monkey, it was playing with a boys cap. The lettering on the cap said Korea.
So that's how I decided to come here by airplane in 2002.

You're awfully particular about who you want to answer your question.
I arrived in Korea, long, long ago. July of 2007.
My husband got a job offer here. We were excited to travel, so he took the job. We hope to stay for a few years.
