One is forced to wonder why one never sees a church with a billboard reading "whatever your beliefs, give a meal to a homeless person today."
Fireball (above): Jesus hasn't fed anybody in a looooooong time. Excepting those who make their living talking about him.

Your question is a valid one. Some Christians are so heavenly minded they are no earthly good. Jesus never promised "heaven" as a retirement home. What He did promise was to set up His Kingdom on earth and He told His followers He would return to check on their progress... boy, is He going to be angry!
No only has organized 'churchanity' not taught the Kingdom message...they even deny Jesus preached it. Instead, they have substituted a personal 'get saved' and 'rapture' gospel, and Christians who fall for that baloney have not been good stewards of the earth.
But not to worry, God is in charge and postive change is only a prayer away. He lets His waywad children go just so far before He corrects them.

I think there is emphasis on both quite honestly. You just have to look in the right places, surround yourself w/ the right kind of people. It's not always as easy as looking up at a billboard. Unfortunately I think that the masses regard the "fear" of NOT going to heaven as more enticing when compared to "helping" others and making a change. Sort of a me vs. you idea, and THAT'S why its plastered all over billboards--pure and simple marketing strategy. Sad though.

I would like to see a church that takes it's memebers and money to the streets of the town they are in. I think that positive change is far more important, but if you believe in God, wouldn't you want to make positive changes in your town? I used to think that church was for making positive change, but then I saw that they just collected money, and stayed in there little group. I think improvement in our towns, in helping our nieghbors, we help our states, and the help we give our state, helps our nation. The point being, if you neighbors need cloths, food, or help, the church should be all over it.

From a Xian point of view, eternal life is much more important than improving your condition on earth.
Edit:
I'd say a better witness would be to make positive changes on earth, than posting "marketing slogans" and witnessing.

And by positive change you mean?... Making abortion legal, legalizing homosexuality, gay marriage, taking Bibles out of public area's, pulling the Ten Commandments out of the courts, making prayer in public schools illegal, making whatever is evil to seem right?... And the list goes on and on.
Oh yeah, one more thing, taking away our 'religious' rights.
Now that might not be a negative thing because 'religious' is any belief system.
What happens when the right to NOT believe in a god is taken away? What will you think of that? And believe me the day is coming when people will be forced to serve a false god. Who's side will you take then?

Today, the Word becomes manifest when some one comes to the service of others, and does so in love.
I will not discount this, even in the face of eternity and salvation.

Because people would rather "secure" their place in heaven than help anyone on earth.

both, you can use the literature to build fires for the poor, thus less of them will die from the cold during the winter.
