I have a language program I bought at Best Buy. It was maybe $25. Those will only take you so far though. Once you have the basic vocabulary, syntax and pronunciation you really have to immerse yourself. Buy regular books, newspapers and get online. Get a good dictionary and someone online or in person who will answer your questions. Then just plug away at it. It takes years of constant immersion to really know a foreign language, so the sooner you begin the sooner you will be fluent. German is a great language so stick with it.
Have fun.

I don't think you should spend a single dollar to learn a language. Actually, I tried Rosetta Stone and many other programs and they didn't work, at least for me. Everything was too easy and repetitive, at that pace you will need years, many years for fluency. What I do is take a good on-line dictionary and start reading the German Wikipedia, translating each word I don't understand and writing it down in a text file, for later review. I also surf the next for very long lists of vocabulary, verbs, grammar... I go to my local library and get exercise books, grammar books and those of the lovely Teach series. I've managed to achieve a level high enough to be able to read the German Wikipedia (which, of course, uses lots of difficult words and expressions) and German newspapers in less than a month. It really needs hard work and self-discipline, but it is truly gratifying.
Viel SpaÃ!

There are some books you can use that are very helpful and far cheaper than $200. I have a book called Learning German: The Easy Way. There are multiple volumes for how advanced the reader wants to get. They can be purchased at Sam's Club. Thats where I got mine. It was only around $15 - $20. Viel Glück!

i think the best way to learn a language is to surround yourself with ppl who constantly speak it. i know it's not at all cheaper than the rosetta stone, but you should go to germany or austria and spend a month or two there. you'll be able to pick up many words in just one week and if you spend a month you might be speaking fluently.
i know this for a fact bc i went to the philippines and i learned how to speak simple sentences in just a week
good luck!

Hi,
In my view, beautiful and very logical language - perhaps not exactly an easy one to try and pick up by yourself. I studied in a German School myself (elementary, junior and senior high school). But they are really good at teaching their language - for sure.
Because you said you can understand some - try these sites for free - if you really like it then enroll in a proper course..

I went to GermanFast.com for my lessons. It worked great for me. It is also a good bit cheaper than the other lessons out there and is one of the best

The joy of seeing souls redeemed, souls eternally saved, is the reward of all that put their feet in the footprints of Him who said, "Follow Me." DA, 523.4
He was in the wilderness in obedience to God, and He would not obtain food by following the suggestions of Satan. In the presence of the witnessing universe, He testified that it is a less calamity to suffer whatever may befall than to depart in any manner from the will of God.Desire of Ages
