I use to tell my daughter I coulnd't understand her and to ask me in a nice voice. Sometimes they don't understand what whining is - so saying 'stop whining' doesn't do the job.

Some kids just whine, it is just the way thy are.
Others can be taught not to. At 21 months, it might be frustration. How well can you understand the child words? If whining is for attention or to get something, correct the action, ignore the action depending on situation. If you respond to child and give them what they want when they whine, you are feeding into the whole thing. good luck!

Calmly tell your child you cannot understand what they want when they're whining. Ask them to use big boy/girl words and tell them if they do they'll get what they want. Then... listen carefully.... IGNORE (the key!) every bit of whining at that moment until they ask with words. It's the hardest thing in the world to do sometimes, but it pays off big when they quit! Don't let it get to you, remind yourself it's fixing the problem. Then, when they DO use big boy/girl words, act ridiculously happy and praise them, telling him/her how happy and proud they made you! Then, your child will phase out of the whining! Best of luck!

I'm still working on it and mine's 4 now. It is going to take alot of patience. I tell him to use his words like a big boy and then I ignore him until he does. It's hard, nerve-wracking and can get very annoying, but he has improved and now whines mostly when he is tired. Good luck!

You have to ignore the whining. If you give in to them when they whine, that reinforces the behavior. I always told my kids that I couldn't listen to them if they didn't talk to me in a normal tone. They'll still whine sometimes, but you have to learn to tune it out. I would put my kids in time out if they didn't stop whining when I told them to.

Just dont respond to her whining. Make her go to her room and whine in there, and tell her she can come out when she can stop it.
