An infidel can have a religion but you just think it's the WRONG religion while atheists don't have a religion and don't believe in the existence of God.

An infidel is a unbeliever, usually in respect to a particular religion, whereas an atheist actively believes all particular religions are wrong. I think

An atheist does not believe in a supreme god or gods. An infidel is used by Christians, (but maybe used mean other religions), to describe some one who is not a Christian.
