Hey, just go. You will get OHA and COLA. The Army cannot tell you where to live and the command cannot affect those two entitlements. Your husband gets them whether his unit likes it or not. I wrote two rather long answers to similar questions already, read them and email me if you have questions.

Also, in the future if you have any Korea specific questions, even military ones, I suggest you post in the Korea forum. In this forum you have a lot of well intentioned people that do not know the latest changes.

I wish I could help you with the questions you asked, but that is not why I am responding. I was a military wife for about 5 years before we divorced. My husband left for Camp Casey 5 months after we were married.
I feel for you and all others...I am a reporter for a local newspaper. I am working on a holiday issue and I am trying to talk to as many people involved with the military as possible. Can I use your story, and could you respond with a little bit more information about your situation. This is extremely time sensitive....my story needs written by tomorrow afternoon — Friday, Nov. 16. If its easier send directly to my e-mail... jhetrick@tdnpublishing.com
Thank you.

there are REASONS why Korea is a Non Command Sponsored tour.

one: if your husband's command said no, then if you go and stay, he can get onto trouble. one, he may have to live in the barracks, which means he will NOT get any money to help pay rent on a place in town. you will NOT be able to access base facilities: medical, dental, maybe not even shopping. you will NOT be protected by the US government, so if you get into any kind of trouble over there, you will be dealing solely with the Korean government.

It truly isn't worth it. 12 months goes by quickly.

Korea is still considered a militarized zone on a verge of combat starting at any time.
No spouses allowed, for their own safety.

And yes he can get into trouble if you just show up, no civilian personnel allowed without special authority.

If this is a hard time for him then try to give him more support and not make him feel guilty for not being able to be with you.
Just be happy hes not in Iraq.

There are reasons for the command to refuse to sponser spouses and while some do go over on their own, it is a very risky proposition. You would have to pay all the costs out of your own pocket and, since your spouse is on a hardship tour and in barracks, chances are he would not be allowed to live with you during duty rotations. Troops deployed to Korea work hard...there are frequent exercises (version of war games for practice) and they can last over 10 days. Units there tend to work long hours with little time off. Without sponsership you would be last on the list for things like medical care. But most importantly, without command sponsership you wouldn't have SOFA status. SOFA is in place to help the members of the military and their families if they should get involved in a situation involving host nation courts. Without it, you are totally subjected to the laws, criminal process and punishments of that country. Many countries have very different court systems than ours and things that may seem like a minor issue (a fender bender) can result in judgements that we may find extreme. It is hard to be apart, but really and truely, the risk for living there without sponsership is too great...both to your personally and to your husband professionally.

I think only higher NCO's and OFFICERs are allowed to have their familes over in Korea. Then it usually a 2 year tour. And there are only certain bases over there that allow families.

If you stay in his barrack room he could get in trouble. I had a friend that went to see her husband and stayed in his room for 2 weeks and it didn't turn out good for her husband when someone snitched.

Becareful! If you cross a commander after he said no.... then your looking at hurting your husbands career. I think that it is awesome that you are going to visit tho!

Have fun and good luck!

Even if non-command sponsored, there is no reason at all why you can't live in Korea. The army just won't pay your way.
