I don't have the traditional view of God portrayed by many organized religions, as in order to do so, one would have to disregard everything we now know about modern science and psychology.
I believe in a supreme force, and the concept of reincarnation. To answer your question, without suffering, one could never truly grow. Without suffering, we would not know true happiness. Those people who have suffered greatly, those are the people who will have the broadest outlook on life. Who will feel that empathy with others suffering, however minor.
On the other end people who are born with great wealth and/or beauty, they rarely develop true character in their lives. They often end up being very cruel to others.
Suffering often changes one's whole outlook on life. No, it's not always an outlook for the better, but there has never been a truer statement than suffering brings about the most room for personal growth.

God doesn't exist.
War and poverty are simply hallmarks of humanity.
The Biblical explanation for it all is that the world is currently under the control of the devil and that, in order for God to establish His authority, He basically has to stand back and let Satan make a right pigs ear of things. In this way Satan will himself prove beyond all doubt what God Himself has known all along; that the devil couldn't organise a pi** up in a brewery and those who follow the devil are the blind being led by the blind.
It actually all makes pretty good sense when you read what the Bible has to say about it all.

Humans create war and poverty...there is more than enough for everyone.
Why blame this problem on God?
The only evil in the world is what we create.

Because of Original sin, we all sin and cause it.
If we turned to God for aid in times of trouble, then we would see a drop in poverty and war.
However, there will still be evil people out there and we must be ready to stop them.

God likes death.
Sources; The Old Testament.
And for all you born again Christians out there, what's He going to do to anyone who doesn't accept Him?

Because God doesn't give a damn about anyone who doesn't worship him. Hell, he hardly cares about the people who DO!
Besides, God doesn't exist, so that negates the prior statement.
