Get the 40 gb model. If your son already has the PS2 why bother paying an extra $100 for backwards compatability, spend that extra $100 on a great game for him. It should be pretty hard for anybody to fill up 40 gb of space especially an 8 year old.
Anyways for a user that is so young it would probably be better to get him a wii. The games are IMO more hands on than just pressing buttons. Even though i have a PS3, i think it was meant for more of the hardcore gamers. A Wii on the other hand, everybody would enjoy not just him.
Also i think they canceled the 60 Gb model and went to an 80 Gb model.

Yes, all of the Playstation 3 consoles have the same graphics. But if you buy him the 40GB PS3 he wont be able to play any of his old PS2 games on it, but he will be able to play PS1 games on it though.
Here are the differences between the 40GB PS3 and 60GB PS3:
The 40GB PS3 has 2 USB ports, The 60GB PS3 has 4 USB ports.
The 40GB PS3 doesn't have the digital camera flash card slots, The 60GB PS3 has the digitla camera flash card slots.
And, the 40GB PS3 cannot play PS2 games, but it can play PS1 games. The 60GB PS3 can play almost every single PS1 and PS2 game ever made.
Also, both the 40GB and 60GB PS3 come with built in WiFi, Bluetooth, Blu-Ray, a Web browser for surfing the web, and of course the same graphics.

It depends really, going by his age I would probably reccomend the 60gb model because of the large catalouge of ps1 and ps2 games that would be ideal. Not to mention of course being able to play all the new ps3 titles.
Graphically they are the same, the 40gb model lacks backwards compatibility with playstation 2 games however as well as a few other removed features which if its primarily a childs game machine you probably wont miss.

Yes it has the same graphics as the 60GB. If you're looking for games I'd recommend Motorstorm, Virtua Tennis 3, and Ratchet and Clank. Also Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Folklore make good use of the controller so he can move it to cast spells and stuff.

you dont have to pay anything for online and its easy to hoook up you will just have to be the person who registers as the master account on the ps3 or else he will be unlocked to everything and the ps3 even has a web blocker now you can have a password to get online or you can set it to block certain sites like myspace and stuff all from the settings menu so check that when you get him one
