I have faith in the notion that the bible is the word of God.
Asking then why I don't have faith in Unicorns and Dragons doesn't make any sense. Now you will probably retort with, "Nobody understands what I'm asking."
You aren't that complex. Your question is daft.
What makes you act morally if you do not have a belief system? Do you consider anyone besides yourself?
What would the world be like if we believers said, "Okay, you are right. Your lack of evidence regarding a higher power is enough to make me quit worshiping."
Many people would live for the day without consequence. Is that a world that you want to be in? Ben Stein had these words of wisdom"
I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew,
and I
don't think Christians like getting pushed around for
being Christians. I think people who believe in God
are
sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I
have
no idea where the concept came from that America is an
explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the
Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my
throat.
Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea
come from that we should worship Nick and Jessica and
we
aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him? I
gu ess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. B ut
there
are a lot of us who are wondering where Nick and
Jessica
came from and where the America we knew went to.
Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early
Show
and Jane Clayson asked her "How could God let
something
like this happen?" (regarding Katrina) Anne Graham
gave
an extremely profound and insightful response. She
said,
"I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we
are, but for years we've been telling God to get out
of
our schools, to get out of our government and to get
out
of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I
believe
He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to
give
us His blessing and His protection if we demand He
leave
us alone?"
In light of recent events...terrorists attack, school
shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine
Murray
O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found recently)
complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and
we
said OK. Then someone said you better not read the
Bible
in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou
shalt
not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we
said OK.
Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our
children when they misbehave because their little
personalities would be warped and we might damage
their
self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We
said
an expert should know what he's talking about. And we
said OK.
Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no
conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and
why
it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their
classma tes, and themselves.
Probably, if we th ink about it long and hard enough,
we
can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do
with
"WE REAP WHAT WE SOW."
Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and
then
wonder why the world's going to hell. Funny how we
believe what the newspapers say, but question what the
Bible says. Funny how you can send 'jokes' through
e-mail and they spread like wildfire but when you
start
sending messages regarding the Lord, people think
twice
about sharing. Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and
obscene
articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public
discussion of God is suppressed in the school and
workplace.
Are you laughing?
Funny how we ca n be more worried about what other
people think of us than what God thinks of us..

There is no historical evidence of , or eye witness accounts that their were ever Unicorns or Dragons.
The Bible on the other hand is full of eye witness accounts and there is Historical evidence that the Bible is True. The Bible has not only been proven just by the Prophecy that have come to pass but by the Believer themselves. The evidence is proven in the Heart and Life of Believers. That is why unbelievers have a hard time accepting it as Truth, because they will never experience it because they simply don't believe it. And yes we will one day see God, everyone will weather they chose to believe it or not, God will reveal himself. Every eye shall see Jesus Christ at the Second Coming. According to Prophecy the next event to take place will be the Rapture of the Church, Which I believe will take place in my lifetime and I also believe it is very near, any moment if not sooner. Prophecy that has been given by Spirit Filled Believers, which is in fact the Holy Spirit ( God ) revealing messages to the Church, these messages are happening more often and He (God) proclaim that He is still in Charge, that we are to get our houses in order, that God is doing and is going to do great and mighty things, that we are to read the book of Acts and get ready. (This is just a few of the recent ones in the last 6 months)
The Bible teaches that once the Word of God has reached every ear, then the Rapture will take place, and with the Internet and Satellite Systems even Third World Countries are now receiving the Gospels.
I believe because of what I have witnessed in my life, and witnessed in others lives, and what I have felt in my Heart. Not because of any negative consequences if I didn' t believe. If I didn't believe it in all totality I wouldn't believe it at all, and therefor would not be worried about any negative results.
I personally believe that the only reason that the Rapture has not taken place yet, is because Jesus Christ is giving those that are riding the fence post (so to speak) time to make the
decision to give their Heart and turn their life over to Him before its too late. The Bible plainly states that all of those that are Luke warm will be spewed out of his mouth and into the Lake of Fire. Faith and Belief in our Lord Jesus is either all or none. Hope you think about my answer and look it up, and read it for yourself, you will see that what I am saying to be the Truth. I will pray that the Holy Spirit will reveal the Truth to you and He will. Feel free to email me, I would be happy to try and explain any scriptures you don't understand.

I come from a VERY religous mother. I have experienced many things growing up that have given me the ability to ponder MANY beliefs. I believe that there is definitely something around us whether it be God or the devil, Angels or spirits demons, etc. I don't believe just because I thin k it will make that specific belief real persay, I believe because of my experiences, things I have seen, witnessed, not just been told. I can't say what it is, you either feel it or you don't. My husband is ANTI-Christ to the hilt, but my beliefs are so abroad that I can see why he questions, why he "hates" why he denies, and I accept that this has not made him in any way a bad person. Truth be told, who is to say that the creatures you listed did not at some point exist? We have never seen the dinosaurs either, only their bones in museums. Those specific creatures were in stories during greek and roman times, perhaps they were seen at some point, whether in visions or by a child, it does not make them fictional. The argument remains the same.

Believing He is not real doesn't mean He doesn't exist, either. We know God is real because He has to be.
Over 300 prophecies concerning one man, written over 3000 years, by 40+ authors all fulfilled with the life of Jesus Christ, a one in a trillion trillion chance of happening; scientifically accurate, geographically accurate, historically accurate, I'd be worried if it weren't the Word of God.
dragons did exist. people used to call dinosaurs dragons (before the word "dinosaur" was a word, circa 1850) there is also a possibility that there are still strains of dinosaur around (though not growing to the massive sizes we find the remains of)
unicorns are a different story. not to say that they don't now nor ever have existed (would be a universal negative, which is scientifically improbable) there is, however, no evidence of them to date.
just because you don't believe in something doesn't mean it's not real.

You're right. Believing in God doesn't make him real. He's real whether you believe it or not. It takes a lot of faith, I know, but how can someone possibly believe that the universe was created out of nothing or that there is no purpose to life? I do believe that the Bible is the Word of God and there is evidence. All of Scripture is inspired by God. Have you ever actually read the Bible? And it's not because there's no negative consequences that I don't believe in unicorns and dragons. I just don't believe in them.

A) Disbelieving in Him isn't gonna make Him go away and not be, either. So your first statement is a non sequitur.
B) I do not require Scripture to believe. That merely tells me what KIND of Deity he is.
C) My own life shines forth with His Presence. Faith is NOT my strong point. I KNOW what I believe, why I believe it and I KNOW it is truth.
D) I do not need to impress upon anyone this faith, this knowing. Its strength, its foundational aspect of my life, is not contingent upon anyone else's opinion or belief or lack thereof.
E) And who said I don't believe in dragons or unicorns? It's a heckuva BIG universe out there and biologically speaking there's no reason there can't be a planet or two that're just lousy with 'em.
F) Negative consequences do not enter into the equation. Knowing and loving God is all positive for me!

Welcome to the free and open forum of Yahoo! Answers. All are welcome to participate in every discussion.
I've always been an atheist. People ask what would convince me that there is a god. I'm not sure, but certainly open to any tangible evidence. However, the answer to whether or not god exists is unimportant to me.
Please don't quote me bible passages as evidence. Remember, this is my standard of proof, not yours. However, if proof were provided that convinced me god exists, I would change absolutely nothing in my life or my behavior.
I ask you the counter question: If evidence were provided that convinced you god does not exist (evidence according to your standards of proof), what would you change in your life?
Would you stop evangelizing?
Would you start sinning more?
Would you stop helping those less fortunate than you?
Would you feel that life is meaningless?
People can commit good deeds and attempt to avoid causing harm to others without belief in god. I never claim that god is on the side of America when discussing politics. God does not take sides, does he?
SO...why do you believe in god? I like to live a purposeful life and certainly would not do something if there was no purpose or pleasure. So if god does not exist, what would be the point in believing? Turn that around and so assuming god exists, what's the point? How do you use that knowledge in your life? Do you use that knowledge to affect positive change in the world? Is it not possible to follow the Golden Rule, do good deeds, and affect positive change in the world without believing in god? Please don't quote John 3:16 that ONLY believers enter heaven as that sounds like belief is motivated in some selfish personal reward.
I have no vested interest in god's existence. I do not see existence of heaven or hell as a reward or punishment. If you believe in god because you want to enter the pearly gates or wish to avoid the fires of hell, that seems rather selfish. Isn't the whole purpose of religious belief so you can become a better person?
For all those thumbs down, I ask you to think about your personal motivation for believing in god.
Good works come without faith too. And those good works can be quite fruitful. But claiming that good works won't get me into heaven sounds like some of you believe that I have some motivation for performing these good works -- the hope of being rewarded with admission to heaven. Nothing could be further from the truth. That seems to be the faulty premise many Christians make about non-believers.
I don't do good works to get into heaven. I perform good works because it is the right thing to do. I have no expectation and have no desire of any reward for my good works. Why is this concept so difficult for many Christians to comprehend?

Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen Heb 11
websters says that faith is an unquestionable belief in something I know that God is read I have no doubt in that fact. I have felt his presence and seen him manifest his power in my life.

John 3. -You must be born again before you can "see" the kingdom of God. You are trying to understand something you are not equipped to do. You can no more comprehend what you are asking than you can fly across the galaxy on a bicycle.
You must be born again-Thats the only starting place. You must get there first, then and then only can you find answers.
Skeptics want proof of God-then they say they will believe. God does not work that way. God says "trust me first"-then I will show you more than you can imagine.

See, you don't understand believers at all. We do have evidence for God. I see the physical world, and I consider it to be the evidence of intelligent design. I find that I have a conscience, and I think this is the will of God. I pray to God, and he answers my prayers.
You believe in lots of things that you have never seen, or experienced the direct effects of. To a certain degree, both of us have "faith" in the existence of black holes.

you believe in god not because your afraid of going to hell but because you'd go to hell to stand up for truth, and I cannot convince you to believe you to come to god, i wont even try.it wasnt the people who told me to believe that made me believe in god it was how i had hit rock bottom and he was the only one who was there for the whole thing. I cant tell you a lot about god im no expert, i just know its difficult to put your faith in something so much bigger than yourself or any one person, if you are curious which i suspect you are asking why we believe i suggest speak in private with a pastor, minister, or do your own research. God bless you!
