Yes. That's why colleges and universities offer associate and bachelor of arts in photography.

At this period of time, it varies. There are basically three main types of photography: commercial, art, and documentary.

So, though there's a lot of photography done without an artistic purpose, there's a lot done with one. It is most definitely an art form, though it's not only an art form.

Painting used to be the same, they used to paint portraits to document the model, paint landscapes to document the area. Even now paintings are used to sell commercial goods. However, photography now does most of what some people would consider the dirty work and I think that's the reason it tends to be looked down upon as an easier craft, though art photography can be made with just as much care as paintings or sculptures, or other more traditional forms.

Photography can be used as an illustrative, graphic, commercial or fine art medium. Some universities specialise in degrees in Fine Art Photography (such as Derby, UK), others focus on the more commercial applications such as journalism, portraiture, advertising etc.

All are forms of art (graphic, commercial, fine etc), and you require as much creative skill to be good as you would for any other medium.

There are many dedicated photography galleries around which will demonstrate the role of photography in fine art.

Definitely.
Producing a good photograph takes a lot more effort than you'd expect. You have to produce a good shot, which requires a good artistic eye. Then you can manipulate the photo in the dark room to give you the effect you want.
I took a photography class a few semesters ago, and I'm truly amazed by the skill of some photographers.

Most definitely, because photography isn't only about taking a picture, it's so much more than that for many people. People who pay attention to detail, composition, and how they develop the film itself, color or black and white for a more classic look, paying attention to focus, do you want the object to be sharply in focus in the front and the background can be slightly out of focus to provide contrast, every photographer is different when it comes to this art form.

It is as much an art as portraiture is in oils. In some cases, even MORE so.

The same elements that distinguishes good painting from bad painting apply to photography. Consider compositon, mood, contrast, etc. If they are not properly applied, a photo, illustration, cartoon, painting, they ALL will fail as a piece of art.

Anyone can take a photograph - but an artist captures an incredible image...take a look at the work of Art Wolfe at the link below - I doubt anyone can deny this is art.

Just as much as painting or sculture are.

Anything that requires knowledge, personal skill, an inner artistic thought, is considered artistic. Pottery, architecture, landscape, even building a walkway are all artistic.

Hope this helped.
