In the New Testament, what does the word "generation" mean?

Then why hasn't Jesus come back like he said he would????

It can be 40 or 100 years.

You will remember that God said to Abraham that after 400 years He would deliver Israel, "...in the fourth generation." A generation in the Bible is normally 40 years long. However, here a generation is 100 years (4 x 100 = 400 years). Since Abraham had his promised child when he was exactly 100 years old, it is evident therefore that the age of a man when he has his first child is here taken for a generation. Nevertheless, notice that the full number (400 years) is exactly times 10 of a regular generation of 40 years. Both 100 years and 40 years are accepted as a generation in the Bible, with the average of the two likewise accepted, but on a secondary level. All things have "two or three witnesses" to them.

A generation is a step in a family tree. You're one generation. Your parents came in the generation before yours. Your grandparents are two generations removed from you, etc.
