That is correct. Especially B. People are always twisting things so that it fits into their personal agenda.

I would agree with A, except to say that it it is kind of slippery to use the phrase "average man". I would re-write it thus:
Religion consists of a set of beliefs that the believer believes himself to believe, and wishes that he was certain of..."
B) I somewhat disagree---many people believe the Bible means what it says, literally. And just about everyone chooses what they wish to focus on in religion, politics, etc. I attend a Christian discussion group where a wide range of beliefs are discussed.
Just as atheists bristle when people make generalizations about them, so do believers. We are not a homogenous group of sheep---"Four legs good, two legs bad!"

I disagree with both. I AM certain of the things I believe, and I truly believe them.
I believe that the Bible means what it says. Not all of my beliefs are perfect - I'm only human. But God forbid that I should twist the Bible and fit it to *my* beliefs rather than shaping my beliefs to line up with the Bible.

I'll raise a third issue here and that is that while most believers claim they 'believe in god', what they actually believe in is "believing in god".
