I have to buy a gift and want to buy a bottle of a really good wine, red or white (95 + points). My budget is $200. What do you recommend?

I don't know them that well, but I know they enjoy wine. They travel a lot, have refined taste and are used to good things. I can't ask them what wine they like. It puts them on the spot because of the price.

It's a gay couple's 25th anniversary. My favorite wine is Kendall Jackson Reisling, but we can't show up with a bottle that costs $14. They'd feel insulted.

they list wines by point and you can flip through til you find what you like.
i agree with the first answer you really need to find out what they like. you could get a 98 pt riesling but if they like dry wine it might as well be a $5 bottle.

If you're in that much of a hurry -- which i certainly understand those last minute gifts - and don't have time to research what they like ... instead of spending near $200 on one bottle of wine - buy a couple different bottles. buy 4 good bottles of wine (you can find exceptional bottles for less than $75) This is also a nice gift because they can save the other bottles for special occasions and look back on it weeks or months later and know where they got that particular bottle.
Baron de Rothschild Pauillac - $ 30 exceptional red for the price
2004 Shea Pinot Noir - great light red from Willamette
Banfi Brunello di Montelcino - amazing big Italian Red
St Supery Virtu - incredible top of the line Sauv Blanc/Semillon blend - not top of the line price -- maybe $50
a champagne might be nice --- look for a Taittinger Brut Rose NV - normally sell for 150 in restaurants -- no where near retail.
Lots of big Napa Cabs and Burgundy Reds require aging - if they're collectors it might be a decent gift - adding to someone's wine cellar is a great thing to do for an event like this.

I assume that you are going to a wine shop. If not, don't bother spending $200 at a grocery store.
If you are hitting a wine shop I suggest two things. One - see if they have something in a large format (magnum, jeraboam, etc.) Wine people love to get them. A lot of top quality wineries make them and most good wine shops have a few on hand. Two - look for a 2000 Bordeaux. It was a pretty good year. (2005 looks to be one of the best years in history, but they are still only in "futures" so you can't walk away with a bottle until next year)
High-end wine people like Napa Cabs too.
Opus 1 is a great idea too.

I would first find out a) does the person you are buying for like wine? (sounds simplistic but you'd be surprised) b) If so what kind of wines do they enjoy? A strictly white wine drinker probably won't enjoy a 97' Napa Cab. After you find these out, go see your trusted wine purveyor, if they hand you a bottle and say. "oh they will love this one", leave. Find someone who will ask questions about who the gift is for, whats the occasion, etc. However if you are looking for a generic recommendation.....Find a bottle of OPUS ONE.
Nate has got some good choices....you can not go wrong with a good bordeaux......just ask the wine guy....he will help you out........Good luck

Ones of the best wines are: Merlot & cabernet sauvignon. In U.S. sales of red varietals, cabernet is second only to merlot. Also, Zinfandel , in Europe known as Primitivo, is a red-skinned wine grape. it is used to produce a popular California wine, known for its intense fruitiness, lush texture, and high alcohol content.
And chardonnay, for those who prefer a satisfying white with their Thanksgiving turkey.
I hope to have helped you!

personally i don't really look at the points...it is a singular persons opinion for a magazine, and I don't always agree. that said if you are trying to impress I would do either Joesph Phelps Insignia (cab sauv/merlot/petit verdot blend), Opus One (red blend), or if you can find it J. Schram Sparkling fro Schramsberg.

Faust Cabernet Sauvignon. It is FABULOUS! It retails for $50+ (in CT anyway). I promise you won't be disappointed.
