While the trip can be done in 45-60 minutes it is best to allow 90 min.

1) Board the airtrain at terminal you are departing.

2) Have USD 5.00 ready for pay for a metrocard as you depart the airtrain at the Jamaica terminus. You will swipe the card at the end of your trip but before you leave the airtrain terminal in Jamaica.

3) Follow the signs for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) ticket office. A ticket for a direct train to NY Penn Station (33rd Street) will cost USD 5 or 7 (peak / off-peak).
- - If you're in a rush you could go straight to the train and pay a USD 5.00 fee (10/off-peak or 12/peak in total). This will enable you to go right to the track which has "Penn Station" displayed as its destination.

In short it is not that hard most of the time. Travel safe.

either way, AirTrain to Howard Beach or Jamaica Station, is easy. both trains run on different lines until they come together at JFK, so you just have to decide which train to get on. the line to Jamaica takes a little longer, but not by much.

from Howard Beach you take the Manhattan-bound A train, and from Jamaica you take the E train at the Sutphin Blvd Station. both of these subways approach Manhattan from opposite directions.

knowing exact destination in Manhattan will help you decide which way to go. if you are going to Lower Manhattan up to about 14th Street, then the A train should be the quickest ride. if you are going to the East Side or Midtown, then the E train may work better. it may also depend on whether or not you will need to change trains. if you can get to your destination on only one train, then it might be easiest to take that one, no matter where you go.

in any case i would also budget at least 90 minutes from the airline terminal AirTrain stop to your goal, just in case something might just go wrong...

Best bet is the air train to Jamaica Station to LIRR. That will put you in Penn Station in Manhattan the quickest.

It is not difficult. Just pay attention the signs. Make sure you read where the train is heading to in advance. Make sure you are on the right track. If you are not sure, just ask someone. If they know they will usually tell you.

Good luck!

Both subway stations are easy. Decide which you want based on where in Manhattan you are going. West side or downtown-- take the A train from Howard Beach; eastern midtown, definitely E train out of Jamaica. you can figure out what's most direct using the subway map at www.mta.info .

Take the Place to the Train - JFK to Jamaica, Long Island Railroad, train station. You could take the E subway, but that's a longer ride and less comfortable.

20 minutes from Penn station to Jamaica station. Change to Airtrain and in 30 minutes you'll be at your terminal.
