I think if the parents are illegal, the baby is illegal too.

If you read your question, it applies to more than just the children of illegal immigrants. Your question can be inferred to include the children of alreadly legal U.S. Citizens. If that is the case, then much like the premise of Starship Troopers, you're implying that Citizenship should be earned by *everyone*. To which, I guess I would have to agree.
Illegal or not, citizenship should be something earned. I believe it is the case that most people who go through the legal process of becoming a citizen are much more informed on the history and political structure of the US than many of it's natural-born citizens. You will always hear of the illegal immigrants that come to take advantage of the system the United States has, but what about those who come here to actually start a new life as a hard-working person (and keep their money in the US, not export it to out of country families.) I would think that those people are far more valuable than the numerous 'natural born' citizens who contribute nothing but expenses to others (taxes, prison terms, welfare dependency.)
Being the child of U.S. Citizens and earning Citizenship automatically is something that should be debated. I am currently 'for' it, but my stance is weak and open to debate. But people's love for their country, as of now, is weaker than the love of what they can get from it.
All those who would stand behind the American flag with pride and above all others, pay their taxes and stand behind the Constitution (although an amendment might require amendment yet again for this change) should be citizens, although I would have no idea how to implement the methods to make it so. Being born on American soil should not automatically make you a citizen.

if one parents is an American citizen, then yes the child is also American. But IF NEITHER of the parents is American, then the child is NOT deemed an American unkless the parents are LEGAL ALIENS (and have green cards). I think its an excellent idea. It would also work for Canada, Mexico and any where else.
I do know that New Zealand has changed its citizenship laws so that children born in NZ are only considered a NZ citizen if ONE (or both) of their parents is actually a NZ citizen, Or if the parents are legal permanent residents.

It isn't a matter of punishing the children, they simply wouldn't be entitled to it, any more than children get to keep things their parents stole for them in any other circumstance.
It is being used to game our system and force us to subsidize education and services for people who shouldn't be here, when our own children's educations, our old and poor people's services and our workers wages needed to support these services are all failing due to mass illegal immigration.
Every country in the EU has abolished automatic birthright citizenship for the same reason.
There isn't 'enough to go around'. Look at the schools in LA thirty years ago and today, and look at how the budgets have changed and how many Americans have fled the public schools, mortgaging their retirements to get their children an adequate and safe education.
That is an AMERICAN birthright because we built and fund the schools. Until every AMERICAN has that, we should NOT be allowing others to take those services from our children.
Why should OUR children be punished?

So what happens if one parent is illegal and the other is legal? I think its an excellent law. If they are born in the US and live in the US...then they are US Citizens. I am a US Citizen and my husband is Mexican (and illegally entered the US) and both our children are US Citizens and shouldn't be punished because their father made a very difficult decision and journey so many years ago.

NO, only if one of the parents is an American. We have a big enough gene pool now. We especially do not need any ILLegal immigrants. We also do not need anchor babies. People should only come here proper and legal. Think about it would you let just anyone to come into your house and take over, perhaps live in the living room. how about 20 or 30 people to live in your living room and maybe 10 or so in you bed room. That is what the illegals are doing. They are just moving in without asking. They are basically stealing from you and anyone who lives here.

As a general rule, where an infant is born should be its place of birth on the birth certificate.
Now having said that; there is a thriving undercurrent of illegal aliens who use the birth of their children in foreign countries to obtain benefits. Perhaps, thought should be given to where the pregnancy was begun. Further thought, should be given to illegals who become pregnant in the foreign country as well.
It may well behoove those illegal immigrants to make a concerted effort to gain citizenship should they choose to remain in the foreign country.

yes, but if the parents are illegal i think they should be able to find a home or take their kids with them if they get deported. they should have thought about being deported before they had kids though because eventually every illegal will be found and told /forced to get out of this country, and come back the legal way. Thats what makes me mad about the whole ordeal. If you want ur kids to grow up in america and the parents are illegal they will have to suffer the consequences. They make their own problems.

I don't believe every person born here is a citizen unless the parents are citizens.
Don't come over pregnant just to have your baby here, what about all of the babies born here whose parents are citizens and can't get help....we need to take care of our own first.

It makes it difficult for the whole family,
If a mother how is not a US citizen gives birth in America and then later gets deported she would have to leave her baby here, This is very common though and I've heard of many cases.

The 14th Amendment needs to be examined to assure it is being interpreted correctly. Its a touchy issue and needs to be examined in detail.
By the way if we would prevent illegal entry into this country with stringent border enforcement this would almost be a non issue.
