I heard that, along with the dangers of microwave cooking. I told someone about this theory and he didn't believe me.

So I got four plants at the dollar store. Two get microwaved water and two get regular water.

Problem is... they're all flourishing. It hasn't been more than a week or so though.

So, has anyone ever tried this? What was the result? For how long did you microwave the water? How long did it take for you to see results.

It's nice to see that you are doing your own experiment to find out, rather than believing everything you hear.

I think you can give your plants microwaved water for years and not see any difference. All microwaving does is to use a certain type of energy to excite molecules causing water to heat up. It doesn't change the water in any way. It can cause damage to living cells which have water in them though.

Most of the microwave myths have been debunked for lack of scientific evidence, but there are some that are for real. One is that it can make you sick, but that's usually because people don't cook the food long enough. Ever notice that if you have a large portion of something the outside might be really hot, but the inside is still cold or frozen? This doesn't kill all the bacteria, so its the bacteria that aren't killed that make you sick, not the microwave process. And you need to use microwave-safe containers to heat the food. Some kinds of plastic will melt and these are supposed to give off chemicals.

Microwaved water is just water. Microwaving something doesn't change its chemical properties - it doesn't suddenly make the water radioactive or something. When you microwave, you impart energy to the water molecules which in turn speeds up their kinetic energy which in turn - we register as a hotter sample of water. It's still just water.

Same old water. It's no different than if you gave your plants water that you first boiled on the stove. Heating water on the stove involved imparting heat energy to make the molecules move faster which in turn causes the temperature of the water to rise and it gets "hot".

microwaves just impart a different type of energy (light energy) to do this same sort of thing.

It's fine - the only bad thing would be to put steaming hot water on your plants - and then it won't matter if you heated up the water on the stove on on a plane or on a train or in your microwave - it's too hot and would kill the plants - just like too hot water would kill your skin.

Thanks for the lesson. Never thought of microwaving water to water my plants. I wonder though if this may be useful when you have a plant that only lives in lime free soil?

Funny that, I've never actually asked a question on this Q&A site. Always too busy answering. LOL
