There is a common misconception that dandruff is caused by scalp skin being too dry. Hence some people avoid washing their hair, believing that the drying effect of shampoo will worsen their dandruff. Their scalp is probably not being cleansed enough; the scale is building up into larger, more noticeable flakes before it falls off the skin. Dandruff problems tend to occur more frequently in people with oily skin and hair.
The real culprit when it comes to dandruff may be a fat-eating, yeast-like fungus called malassezia, formerly known as pityrosporum.
Malassezia lives on the scalps of most healthy adults without causing problems. But sometimes it grows out of control, feeding on the oils secreted by your hair follicles and causing irritation that leads to increased cell turnover.
All skin cells die and are replaced by new cells. Normally, it takes about a month for new cells to move from the lowest layer of your skin, where they form, to the outermost layer, where they die and scale off in flakes. Because cells renew themselves slowly, this process usually isn't noticeable.
But on scalps where malassezia thrives, the whole process can take as little as 11 days. The result is a large number of dead skin cells. As the cells fall off, they tend to clump together with oil from your hair and scalp, making them appear white, flaky and all too visible.
Mayo Clinic's recommendations for dandruff self-care are:
Learn to manage stress.
Shampoo often.
Cut back on styling products.
Eat a healthy diet.
Get a little sun.

Dandruff isn't caused from shampoo, unless it is drying your scalp. He is thinking of product buildup. It can look similar to dandruff, and can also dull your hair and make the roots look unclean. There are plenty of shampoos that remove residue like that. They are usually under names like "cleansing, refeshing, clarifying". If you know that it isn't buildup, then you might want to find a good medicated shampoo like the Head & Shoulders (the smaller bottles that come in the boxes). If you don't start getting results within a month, you can research some remedies on the internet and/or schedule and appointment with a dermatologist.

I have a very weird scalp, the roots get oily really quick and yet I still have some dandruff. It's horrible to deal with so treat your hair and scalp right!

dandruff is caused my having a dry scalp. You might have remnants that look like dandruff if you don't wash your hair out thoroughly after shampooing. However, the culprit is dry scalp. You should really use a conditioner as well after you shampoo as the PH level is closer to yours.
Also, apply a bit of tea tree oil in your shampoo works wonders.

Hello, I am a hair dresser. Dandruff is having a dry, flaky scalp. When you don't rinse the shampoo out of your hair completely, it dries and resembles dandruff visually, but it feels different and is much easier to get rid of. Hope this helps!

It can be because when your hair dries, the shampoo left over does too and it makes your scalp dry. Sometimes it's because your scalp it's too dry, try to use some oils or try some cream to help your scalp.
