I think that depends on the local traffic laws.

When you ride on the sidewalk you are opening yourself for some unexpected accidents. Cars don't expect you on the sidewalk even in a small town. They won't be looking for you there.
Be safe -- not to mention legal, ride on the road.

You are not supposed to ride on the sidewalk. Sometimes you can be forced into doing that because of the configuration on the road. However, those situations are very much more the exception than the rule.

It depends upon where you live. State laws and city/town ordinances vary greatly.
Here in Arizona, bicycles are considered a road vehicle. However, "the law" and people kinda turn a blind eye to young children riding on the side walk.
Here you could get a ticket for riding your bike on the sidewalk and pay a fine.... have your bike confiscated.

You'll get a ticket for this in many areas, up to $275, so it's no joking manner. If you're over 12 years old, you should NOT be on the sidewalk. "I really don't care" is a poor attitude to have. Show some respect for people walking on the sidewalk !

I particularly have a pair places the place I journey the sidewalk through extreme danger interior the line (narrow and curves). this is an extremely gently travelled sidewalk via pedestrians; i've got in no way encountered one. greater acceptable that than to be mowed down via some telephone/text fabric/GPS/hamburger/cigarette-distr... motive force, or a inebriated! definite, this is unlawful in maximum cities, yet hardly ticketed in my section. A cop i know says he in no way stops a bike on the sidewalk except he sees the rider race previous pedestrians or tension them off the sidewalk, or frequently doing something silly.

depends on the speed limit, if its 20 or below ur supposed to ride on the road, but if its over 20 they dont want u on the road so the only place to go is the sidewalk or bike path.

Pending where you are from but in Canada it is illegal .
my daughter was in a situation were she had to be on the sidewalk for her safety, and was worn by the police that it was not legal to be on the sidewalk even if every body is doing so.

A bicycle is a transportation veihicle that is suposed to be riden on the road. That is why you have to follow all traffic laws. The sidewalk is for pedestrians only!

It depends on where you live. There is a certain block radius in downtown Colorado Springs where we are clearly not allowed to, but anywhere else in the city is apparently OK.
