Each weapon has its own merits.
As a UK gun owner I can't comment on a machine gun or pistol.
A sniper rifle is poor terminology.
So therefore a shotgun is the best in my opinion.

Sniper-the Army and Marines use a Bolt action in .308 most of the time, Remington. Shotgun-too many different uses to say without you picking something such as sporting clays, duck hunting, pheasant hunting, deer hunting, quail hunting. Each of these uses a different style shotgun and barrel length and choke for being best. Machine gun-M2 Browning .50 cal as it is the longest lasting in use and has had only 1 modification since John Browning designed it. For those who were in the military-remember the little window to see the square projection so that you knew you had the bolt in the right spot to check headspace and timing. Pistol-again the answer depends upon use. The best concealed carry pistol is not the best target, hunting, open carry, military defensive pistol. Sorry, but your question is a little vague.

There is no such thing as a sniper rifle, the man behind the trigger determines it's use. In the hands of a skilled sniper, ANY rifle becomes a sniper rifle as soon as the sniper pulls the trigger. If you're reffering to a bolt action high power rifle, go for a remington 700, best off the shelf value out there.
Shotgun, Remington 870
Machine gun, MG-42
Pistol, too many great ones to choose from, but my prefference is either Kimber,Ed Brown, or Les Baer 1911.

1. Accuracy International AW Super Magnum in 338 Lapua.
2. Best shotgun? Prettiest? Most reliable? Most effective? My Beretta Extrema II is fine.
3. Light, medium or heavy? BREN or a Minimi, GPMG/M240 and the M2 50 BMG.
4. Too many choices, if I only had one it would be a Glock 20, but a custom 1911 or a Sig 220 or 226 is prettier. But the G20 has most firepower.
Sniper Rifle is not a poor term, not when you are considering the tools snipers use. The AW is extremely stable and accurate, it isn't affected by weather and it's very tough. The 338 Lapua is a good match to the 50BMG out beyond 1000 yards but without the disadvantages of firing a small artillery piece.

It sounds like your firearm experience is limited to whatever your first person shooter picks up on XBOX360. "Sniper rifle"? Are you kidding? A high powered rifle can be used for sniping, hunting or competitive shooting. A shotgun can be used for birding, clay pigeons, small game, riot control, personal defense, law enforcement, or close quarters combat. Machine guns can be used in defensive or offensive movements by ground troops, fixed guns on armored vehicles, fixed guns on aircraft, fixed guns on ships to repel aircraft, the list goes on. Pistols can be used for self-defense in the home, law enforcement, hunting, personal safety when hiking or camping in the wild, target shooting, or trick shooting.
Perhaps you should lay off of the Grand Theft Auto 4 and ask your dad to teach you how to handle a firearm...when you are old enough.

depends on what the purpose is..
hunting- shotgun or rifle
sniping- rifle
home defense- shotgun, pistol
war- machine gun
too broad of a question to say one type is best... but I do enjoy a nice 24inch 12 gauge Remington 870 shotgun .

It depends if you are going to take long shots you need a rifle, but with quick long shots you need a machine gun.
But I prefer haveing a shotgun because you have a better advantage of hitting your target with all the pellets.
