If god cant lie, then he isnt all powerful.
Thats probably why he doesnt speak to humanity...can you imagine....
Human: God, do you send unbaptised babies to hell ?
GOD: YES
Human: And do you regard animals as just a resource for people to use, slaughter and abuse as they see fit, even though animals feel pain and respond to love and kindness?
GOD: YES
Human: In the past, you ordered your followers, chronicled in the bible, to commit acts of genocide on other people. Is that true?
GOD: YES
Human: Well God, I think that those who follow you are fools. You are anti-human and I find your requirements for being a follower....disgusting.
GOD: Go to hell!

The idea of an all-powerful, all-benevolent (loving), all-knowing being is problematic philosophically. Here is another question to ask yourself, an old question known as the Problem of Evil:

If God is all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-benevolent, how can evil exist?

If God is all-knowing, then He must know that evil causes good people to suffer. If God is all-benevolent, He must desire an end to suffering. If God is all-powerful, He has the ability to end suffering. Therefore:

An all-powerful, benevolent, and knowing God cannot possibly exist, given the nature of the world around us.
Any God that exists must have some limitations, since evil and suffering exist in the world. If god is all-powerful, then he must not be all-knowing or all-benevolent, and so on.

I will leave you with a quote from Thomas Jefferson:

"Question with boldness even the existence of a god; because if there be one He must approve of the homage of reason more than that of blindfolded fear."

Let's see...to those concerned, many say the bible is the word of god (or the inspired word of god or whatever word of god)....so if in god's word it says he cannot lie, and god, in actuality, can or does lie, then it simply means that that particular passage of the bible is in error or, more probably, a lie (and since some some consider the bible to be the word of god, god lies in making that statement). Thus, yes, god can and does lie.

Good point! There are things like this He cannot do. He can't sin at all.

There are also things He does not know!

1. He does not know anyone that has not sinned (Rom 3:23).
2. He does not know any way to get to heaven without Jesus (John 14:6).

I'm quite happy about this, because if I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior, and believe He rose from the dead for my sins, I'm GUARANTEED to go to heaven! (Rom 10:9-10, 1 John 5:11-12).

Look up "send lying spirits" in the Old Test and "shall send a Great Delusion so that they believe a lie" in the New Test.... both in reference to God. He sends lying spirits to certain "prophets".

As for God can't do anything against his own word... He killed the entire world off, while knowing before he even created the world that he would do that... that is premeditated murder.

God cannot lie due to His very nature of being good. If he so chose, I'm sure He could (far be it from me to deny the ability of the Great Divinity), but he would not and could not.

Things in this world have absolute properties, correct? Take water for instance. Could water not be wet? That is absurd, of course water must always be wet. Could fire be cold? No, fire is by nature hot. God is by nature truth. If he lied, he would violate the very substance of what He is, and all creation would come to an end.

My advice - don't try to get God to lie. Bad idea!

Good luck with your religious and philosophical ponderings!

The bible also says that god sends lying spirits to decieve his prophets and in 2 Thessalonians 2:11 it says "God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie."

So what's going on?

Take consolation. Bible afterall was not written by God. Let it have it's say that the God in the Bible cannot lie.

"God can do anything that is not counter to His nature" is what I was told. Therefor, I responded, God is immensely powerful, but not all powerful. To this I have yet to get a response.

Edit -

See pretty much every response (so far) for proof of the above.

God can do anyting. But omnipotence isn't magic. Your confusing God with Samantha Stevens.

God does not contradict Himself. Since He is the embodiment of truth, He doesn't lie. He doesn't make rocks so heavy that not even He can pick them up, either.

God isn't self-contradictory.
