It contains great truths about good and evil and courage and love and compassion and fraternity and so on. It contains no facts, unless Hobbits really do eat that often, of course.

By extension to your other question, I love Marcus Borg's suggestion in Reading the Bible Again for the First Time that we can take the Bible very seriously without taking it literally.

Well, it's a fictional book written to allow Britan to develope their own mythology (something not borrowed from other countries as was the Arthurian legend). While it holds some truths about how we should treat one another and the balance of good and evil (the book itself states that this is not the end of evil, just this particular evil), it bears no facts.
