Although many people don't agree with me a pawn shop can be a great place to purchase a rifle. You need to know a little about guns so that you don't get taken advantage of, but good deals can be found. I purchased a 3030 from a pawn shop for $150.00 that is currently valued at over $750.00. Local gun shops are a good place as well. The local gun shop can be helpful to you if you are not sure what you want. In any case make a informed purchase that makes you happy. Right now is not a good time to find a rifle due to it being deer season, after the season prices drop considerably.

You may be limited by what's available locally. In my area, there are several local gun shops that are treasure troves of used guns that range from the inexpensive and mundane but completely seviceable to really fine firearms that anybody would be proud to own. They're fun places to window shop even if I'm not really in the market, and I find they have better choices than the big chains or generic stores that don't specialize in firearms; that is, I shop with a person who has a store rather than with a store. That may not help you out much if you're in a hurry, but it's good to have contacts. If you're looking for something for this deer season, it's hard for me to imagine. I always want at least six months to work up loads and get used to a rifle before I hunt with it.

There are a bunch of good answers here. Another thing is to go to a range and talk to the gunsmith there. Ask him to write down what to look for as far as signs of wear, trouble spots, et.c. on the type of rifle you are wanting. Then go to some pawn shops and look. I you find one you like, ask the owner to hold it for you and pay the gunsmith to come with you to look it over. I did that once and got a great bargain on a Marlin 336C which I have taken about a dozen deer with. Some gunsmiths are willing to make a little extra money if they are not too busy at the range, and it helps if you talk to them first about what you want to do.

Gander Mtn is WAY expensive here. I think Ruger offers some of the best values in all categories guns (thats why I own so many Rugers!). Stay away from pawn shops but check out your local non-chain outdoor outfitters.

Your local gun shop will be your best bet. You can find guns at a pawn shop but you don't know what you are getting. Your local gun dealer will have new and used guns and will be knowlegable about their condition. If you are looking for something new, you can't go wrong with a Savage rifle. They are good accurate guns at a very reasonable price.

You can get a Remington model 710 for pretty cheap. I got the model 700 .270 and love it.
