I recently took a week off of working out which turned into almost three weeks because I got really sick at the end of my week off.

When I go back sometime in the next few days go is it ok to hit the weights really hard just like I used to? or do I have to start slow and build back up?
What are the consequences?

It depends on how long you were gone. You should expect some additional soreness after taking a break. If you've been off for a while you may want to start back slow the first week at least. Since you've only been gone three weeks I'd take it fairly easy the first week, work your way back then you can hit it hard the second week. There is no need to make yourself miserably sore or risk injury by jumping headlong back into your program after being gone three weeks.

Another factor is your age. If you are over 40, it will take longer than if you are still a youngster.

Also are you completely recovered from your illness?

I would err on the side of caution... I know it is tempting to make up for lost time, however, that will be unproductive in the long run.

The consequences: at a minimum sore muscles
if you are still recovering from a virus etc. you could do damage to your heart. !!
