I just bought the new CR-V (Honda) and got an AT car for the first time. I always use "D" when I drive but my bf said using 2 and 1 would be better. When would I use them? What difference does it make? Can I save gas using them?

1 and 2 are the same as 1st and 2nd gears in a manual transmission, and you will get lower fuel mileage driving with the lower gears selected. Use "D" for most driving, or better yet... Read your new car's owner's manual and follow the instructions you find there.

I think your BF is a frustrated sports car driving wannabe.

The owner's manual will probably instruct you to leave the car in D for most driving situations. Even towing should not require you to gear lower to start out, since the automatic tranny starts out in as low a gear as it needs, and gears up, as required.

The manual will probably also mention that the only time to gear down would be in climbing a steep hill, and, under a load, where the transmission keeps gearing up and down, "hunting" for the right gear to make the climb. When you feel your car doing that, then gear down one step. If it continues, then down another. Be sure to gear back up as the road levels.

Another situation may be in a steep downhill grade. If you feel the car trying to go too fast on a downhill, and you are using continuous brakeing to maintain a safe speed, then, slow down with the brake, gear down, and let the enging provide some of the brakeing power. Again, be sure to gear back up when you reach a more level stretch.

D is Drive. 1 and 2 are first and second gears, respectively, and are for special situations, like starting out when towing, or stuck in the mud, etc. For normal situations, use "D".

And no, you will use more gas, as 1 and 2 don't shift into highter gears.

Use 1 or 2 in slippery situations...mud, snow, ice etc or when going down steep inclines to help keep the vehicle going slower.
