No! I'm totally anti-uniform. Over here it's very rare for schools to even have a dress code beyond 'wear something'; we had kids wearing mohawks, halter tops, sandals, one guy wore wooden clogs (in spite of what some tourists think, those are not normally worn by the Dutch anymore, only farmers still wear them but it's very rare in town). One teacher sometimes wore an Arabic kaftan. The most common excuse for dress codes is that it's distracting when kids wear all kinds of strange clothing, but when someone wore something new to class, we looked for about a minute or so, made an occasional comment, then went on with the class, mostly *because* no one made a big deal out of it. Nowadays, I regularly hear about dress codes violations, people protesting, others protesting more, etc, etc from schools *on another continent*. How's that for disturbing??? I'm fully convinced tight dress codes cause more & greater disturbances instead of preventing them. And uniforms, until I went to the US for college, I was totally amazed to learn a modern country like the US still had those in school. I had never heard of any school where they still wore uniforms except from books from my parents' school days!
Then there's the people who say that uniforms teach children how to dress for success, because in many jobs we need to dress up too. Well, fine, but 1) how much practice do you need in dressing up? Just pull off the old clothes, put on the new ones and you're all set, doesn't need years of practice. 2) not *all* jobs require suits and such. I don't want to dress up fancy and I'm happy with the work I do. Even some higher jobs especially in the IT don't require suits. We can chose what kind of job we want, we ought to be able to chose what school we want (especially important if it's not just the school but the entire district enforcing the policy!) 3) It's a lousy thing to teach children to judge someone by the dress they wear. If I have any children, I want them to learn to *not* judge people on their appearance, that's a far more important lesson and I wish more people had learned that one.

I personally do not like my childs school pushing uniforms. I understand that there is a desire to control gang activity or prevent fighting because some children have brand name clothes and others do not. However, my daughters school has never had a problem with either of those issues. I have seen more clothing violations since the uniform policy started.

I am not a uniform fan. But if kids can't get some common sense and learn to self govern their own actions there isn't much left but a crackdown. I know when my own kids went to school and had uniforms.....there were still those who had to go to extremes to be different. It's hard to believe someone could sleaze up a uniform.....but they did.
When I went to school.....girls wore dresses only...you knelt on the ground and the hem should touch the floor but you could get away with it being 2 in. above the floor. No sneakers. Guys had to wear button up shirts, tucked in with a belt around their waist. Belt in black or brown no wider than 1 inch. No t-shirts or polo shirts or shorts or sandals or sleeveless or even cap sleeves. No sweat shirts, no jewlery except a watch, no shoes that made noise while walking...no boots, no heals, socks must be worn.....heck it was pages long. I don't understand when people fought for freedom.....others can't temper it with a bit of common sense in order to keep it, without resorting to no freedom at all.

Yes. This way student won't have to compete with each other and let vanity rule their student lives. That would leave them time to concentrate on school work.

i would have liked it when i was in school. there were so many rules that went with how people dressed. And they were broken everyday.
Instead of trying to see who would be more risque today, we'd all look the same and kids would have to be begging mom and dad for designer clothes. we'd all look the same
