i have extremely SEVERE chronic back pain from a 15 degree curve from scoliosis. i know it is small, but it is incredibly painful. i have always been very active but lately i am finding the pain is too much, i am scared i will be in a wheelchair soon if something doesnt change. i still try to lift weights and work out but it is exhausting with the pain i am dealing with. my specialist just says surgery but i am scared of being paralyzed. how do you deal with the pain? i have done everything you can think of, but would love to here what has worked for u! thank you! oh and i am not into drugs, my last doc prescribed a high dosage of oxycontine but that is not for me! thanks again.

Lifting weights would not be the best for Scoliosis! I have Scoliosis and Rheumatoid Arthritis and found excellent benefit in a course of Pilate's. They teach you how to isolate the muscle groups and then strengthen them. I am surprised they have not put you on a anti-inflammatory drug, to stop the muscle becoming inflamed. Likewise massage I found good along with Aqua Jogging and Steam or Sauna.

Lifting weights would not be a good idea for you to do. You might want to check into doing yoga or pilates to strengthen your core muscles which will help in the long run. Although your curve is very small if your specialist actually agrees to do the surgury on you then you should go for it. I had the posterior fusion surgury 11 months ago today and it was the best thing I ever did. My curve was only 41 degrees but now it is 0! and guess what, I rarely rarely ever have back pain anymore. Before the surgury I would miss school all the time because my back would hurt so bad, scoliosis really took over my life. I was scared at first about the surgery too but I decided that I was better off in the long run to go ahead and get it fixed and im glad I did. With all the technological advances these days the surgury isnt as big of a risk anymore. It is very rare for someone to be paralyzed from the surgury and it is more likely to happen to someone who has severe curves (which you dont). Back even 35 years ago the patient would be placed in a cast all around their back and ordered on bed rest for up to a year or more. These days the hospital stay is less than a week (I stayed for 4 days, 2 in icu and 2 in regular), the nurses have you up and walking the very next day after the surgury. The pain meds are very good so you feel no pain what so ever. You are very stiff for a good while ( like 3 months) and it is hard to get used to, but eventually your body gets used to the rods being there and the muscles move back in place and you loosen up. As with any surgury there are restricions but most of them are lifted after 6 months. Also they encourage you to walk every day after your surgery because it helps your body heal faster. I would suggest you go to spinekids.com if you are a teen because it is a kid/teen forum that is made up of kids and teens from around the world who have scoliosis and they will answer every little question you could ever have about it. If you are an adult I would suggest going to http://www.scoliosis.org/forum/index.php they are very good as well. I wish you luck and I hope you can find a treatment that will make you feel better!

don't worry you will not end up in a wheelchair so long as you take care of it! :) backbracing is often helpful, or sometimes surgery is the best option to stop the pain. just try talking to your doctor.

try alternative medicine like hypnotherapy or meditation. Sounds like you are in a pickle. Try that or different meds or consider the surgery!
