You may be correct. It is apparent that we are to be looking at heaven for many of the signs of the times. Look how much of the bible is about those signs in the heavens.
"And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for SIGNS, and for seasons, and for days, and years:" Gen 1:14
"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handiwork" Psalm 19:1
Abraham was told his seed would be as “the stars of heaven.” Gen. 22:17
Joshua was given the heavenly sign of the sun staying in one spot Joshua 10:13
Hezekiah was given the sign of the sundial going backwards Isaiah 38:8
The Magi saw a star in the east as the sign the Messiah was born Matthew 2:2
"The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come." Joel 2:31
"And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;" Luke 21:25
"But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men." 2 Peter 3:7

Why in the world is this guy allowed to post stuff on a .EDU website? The comet is not larger than the sun. He is including the halo of the comet but no including the gases that are being emitted by the sun. The sun is way larger than this comet.
As for comets being signs of disasters, you can see a comet in the sky pretty much anytime. You just have to know where to look. What was the disaster associated with the Hale-Bopp comet?

Yes.
Just like it did in 1892 and 1893.
The name of the commet indicates that you need to be at 221b Bakers Street. It's orbital period is 6.9 years, so you need to be there 6 months and 9 days after it got so bright - so May 2nd 2008.
It went from a magnitude of 17 to almost 2. So you need to step in front of the number 2 bus at 17:00 - ie 5 pm.
Then you will truely be saved by Jesus - who will be driving the bus.

Why would this comet have any higher significance than the last comet we had or Haley's comet back in the 80's.

Your spam...er, post seems to suggest that a comet is actually larger than the sun....
And your more than evident ignorance appears to be fueling your superstitious remarks....
You see? The dumber you are the more religious you get....

It did bring to mind the words about the "sign" that we will
see when he returns...
but since its suppose to be "his sign" i doubt its gonna
be something like a typical comet...
any who, its good to see that others are waiting for it
and paying attention to whats going on...
Christ is coming...
