My cat is 17 years of age, I have caught her 3 times lying in her litter box, is this a sign that she's having trouble Urinating? Could this be a sign of kidney problem? She doesn't go any where else but her litter box..

I would defiantly take her in, very well could be urinary infection, kidney, liver, diabetes, so many things but I would find a vet that can get her in today. Don't wait.

Very well could be. Take her to the vet for some tests. I know that you are probably already prepared at her age that she could have serious, life-threatning problems such as kidney failure. She may also just have a hard time moving around so she likes to just lay there. Try picking her up and moving her to a "comfy" spot next to the box. Add a couple of boxes around the house so she has easy access. This is sweet 'cause she doesn't want to have an "accident" and that's hard. It's like expecting a 90 year old not to occassionally wet their pants. I have had 2 pets that died from kidney failure at old ages but they lived long, healthy, happy lives! One had diabetes too, so check for that as well. I DID NOT PUT THEM TO SLEEP. I feel that if we don't put asleep our elderly familiy members to sleep, why should we our pets? Yes, they may be uncomforable but there are pain meds. and as long as they aren't totally senile or suffering horribly even w/ meds, don't do that. Let your cat die naturally. You may want to start to prepare everyone esp. if you have kids for the inevitable. First things first, take her to the vet TODAY! The sooner you catch problems, the better! Good luck. I have 3 cats ages 12-18 right now and they are part of my family. They have 2 pesky dog siblings that are a year old but they've let them know whose the boss!

Sounds like a urinary tract infection. It is odd behavior which indicates something is wrong. Like the cat has to pee but cannot, so she will hang out in the box until she does.

See if there is a decrease in the amount of urine in the box. Even if it is the same amount I would call the vet because it is strange to do that all of a sudden.

Hmm- Well, she is a very old kitty. You might want to take her for a check-up. I've heard of cats sitting and laying in their litter boxes, but the only cat I actually had that did that was very sick.

I would take her to visit the vet, the only time I have ever known cats to do this was when they were seriously ill so I always count it as a bad sign.

It is definitedly a sign that something's amiss.
Is she going pee and poo okay? Take to vet if any discomfort or signs of trouble.
It also could be just senility. I have old pets that are doing outa-ordinary things which I contribute to old age dementia to some degree.

Maybe it's just because cats like to lie in boxes and small places. My friend's cat always lies in boxes, sinks, and baskets. The bladder issue could be it, I'm no veterinarian, but maybe you're over-analyzing this.

if she is urinating and deficating fine, i wouldn't be too concerned. if she has blood in her urine, strains to urinate, or has any unusual stool, i would take her in to see a vet.
