A cover letter is a letter sent to explain why your are sending the other stuff you sent with the cover letter.

For example (one of the most common) you send a resume to a corporation. As they may have hundreds of positions available you include a cover letter introducing yourself and telling what type of position you would like to be considered for. It is also a good idea to include a little information that shows you know something about the company. It shows you have enough interest to research the company not just send out resumes blindly.

a cover letter is used to basically explain why you are sending something. what is it for? if it is for a resume, the cover letter is used to introduce yourself, to let the company know why they should hire you, and to ask for an interview. if it is for something else, it is still a letter to introduce whatever material you are sending. you can go online and find examples of cover letters at various sites. hope this helps.
