God likes variety. All races do not look the same. Even twins look different. Flowers, vegetation etc looks different. Just as well. Verity being the spice of life.
Even within a religion like Christianity, some may be more fond of Mother Marry and others to Jesus etc.
Problems only arise when Bigots come on the scene and start claiming their way or the highway.

Confucianism and Buddhism, both founded well before Christianity and Judaism, and around people who had philosophical ideas, not deities.

Taoism and Shintoism have similar histories.

All kinds of pagan beliefs throughout Europe and the British Isles before they were converted and now there is a restoration movement of sorts.

This only covers what I know of Asian and European culture, there were plenty of other figures in North and South America, Australia, and Africa, plus movements I've not heard of or forgotten about in the other places.

Judaism took some of its ideas from Zoroastrianism and grew up around the pagan Egyptian culture and religion. It then went on to eventually splinter into Christianity which incorporated elements from other religions. Catholicism most notably did this as priests would canonize pagan gods (Saint Brigit aka Brigit the fire goddess of the Celts, Christian cross and Thor's hammer pendents...). Jesuit priests most notably did this in their missionary work. Christianity would also splinter and found different streams of faith, like Mormonism.

Then, Islam came about and said that Christianity and Judaism were just one step down from its faith, and it incorporated others (including Buddhism, I think) all into its line of prophets, but said Mohammad was the last prophet and everyone would eventually have to follow him. Mohammad ripped off most of the traditions of Jews and Christians at the time, made some adjustments, and pissed off everyone. This way everyone is close to, but not quite Muslim, so it is their duty to convert them...or steal their money and conqure them.

Religions are human institutions that grew out of a snapshot in history and served a purpose for a select group of people at a certain time. As they evolved they incorporated more and more elements, mostly by taking from traditions that were already in place.

The gods of the Romans and Greeks that I hope you studied briefly in a humanities or social studies class in school, where just as real to those people at that time, as God is to you now. So that means, logically, you have either accept all faiths, or accept none.

Futhermore, everyone has their own interpretation, so that means either:
1. All points are vaild.
2. There is no god.

We have so many religions because, at least in the eyes of many people, whether they really accept the idea or not, we have many gods through our various cultures and preceptions.

Its because everyone experiences the divine or the sacred in a different way from one another. Because this experience is rooted in man's interaction with the people around him, there will still be a certain amount of "same-ness" in how we encounter the divine, therefore some tend to follow the religions that most adeptly express what they experience.

No doubt God is only one.

Unfortunately followers of every Messenger of God tend to love him so much that after his death they elevate him to the level of god. They make images and statues of their dead Messenger, start calling him god and worship him instead of worshipping the real God directly. In India they say their gods are the shadow of real God.

Please note that I use capital 'G' for real one God and
'g' for fake god. They go stray too far in worshipping the new god and forget the real God.
Then God sent another Messenger. Many people started believing and following him but many reject him and continue to believe their god. The followers of new Messenger give different name to their religion. And religion kept growing like that.

So far Muslims believe Mohammad as Messenger and do not worship him. They all worship God Himself directly and pray to God asking to God to bless the soul of Mohammad.

There a group of Muslims in India that has started elevating Mohammad so high that they write psalms and sing praises for Mohammad. They do not write psalms to sing praises of God. All other groups of Muslims call this group as deviated from the right path and consider them Mushrik (those who make partners with God). The education of reall Islam is growing rapidly in Muslim world for the fear of these Mushrikeen to limit their effect.

Though the God is one and only and He always taught to worship Him only and gave same message, people keep creating new religions. Some of the intelligent men take advantage of the innocence of their supporters to gain power and getting rich by fooling their innocent supporters.

This is how religions keep growing in number though real God is only one. And God says in his scriptures that He will burn the wrong religious leaders in hell fire. And He will accept only one Group of religion that will be on right path.

In the beginning, God created man in His image. Ever since that time, man has been trying to create God in man's image of what he wants God to be.
