If your dog got a hold of the chocolate last night and is still around today, you can rest easy! Just remember: milk chocolate is mild compared to dark chocolate or baker's chocolate. A dog will react like having a caffeine buzz, have diarrhea, and become dehydrated quite quickly when consuming this kind of chocolate!
Keep hydrogen peroxide on hand in case of emergencies in the future. I have a first aid kit for my dogs, as well as my family.

I agree with the previous posts.

A large dose of theobromine (the ingredient in chocolate that causes poisoning in canines) can cause serious symptoms in just a few hours. However, as the chocolate travels down the GI tract, more theobromine is absorbed and symptoms can then set in. ( For an excellent article on chocolate poisoning, see the link below.)

Since you are at a disadvantage (being at work), my suggestion is that you call your vet's office and discuss it with them.

On the positive side, since there was no problem during the night, your dog may got lucky this time. Also, it seems that some dogs are somewhat more tolerant to theobromine than others... I once had a white Collie that ate 11 chocolate covered donuts; it didn't bother her in the slightest!

Good luck!

As a vet tech, this can be serious. For example a 35# beagle ate about 3/4's# chocolate bunny and was fine for about 2 weeks until it hit his blood work showed he was very sick, it was discouraging and treatment wasn't expected to work, but he did make it. Costed the owner a 10 days vet stay and over 2 thousand $. prices vary from place to place but IV's, medications, blood work and etc. add up fast. Some animals seem to be fine while other die. You need to contact you vet. Chocolate can be very toxic. Call you vet
wishing you best of luck.

Depends on how much she got hold of and what the actual chocolate content of the cocoa was. Most of those drink mixes contain more sugars and artificial flavorings than actual cocoa. Hershey's dark semi-sweet chocolate or Baker's unsweetened chocolate would be much worse...if a dog that small wasn't showing ill effects by this morning, she most likely won't...

Are your dogs intact? Intact males have been known to leave home and roam in search of females in heat if they smell one within a few miles of home. The other option would be something else equally interesting on the other side of the fence (like another animal perhaps? Or food?) that attracted him enough to want to go under the fence. The only way to dog proof your fence from then digging under it that I know of would be to bury the fence a foot or more under the ground so they cannot dig under it as much- but I have also known chihuahuas to climb. You could try packing dirt tightly against the fence to make it harder for them to dig- or place cinderblocks up against the fence so they cannot get to the fence to dig under it. Regardless whenever they are in the yard I would keep a close eye on them since he's proven he is trying to escape for whatever reason.

If she was alright this morning after eating the Coco last night then it probably didn't cause her any problems. Just keep an eye on her for a few days. it sounds as if she is going to be OK.

Patriot R is correct, most cocoa mix doens't have too much actual chocolate in it, and it she didn't eat much of it and is still fine today, I'm sure she's alright. If you're still worried about her, a trip to the vet can set your mind at ease.

You shoulod check on her if at all possible, because as you said, chocolate is very dangerous to dogs, but my dog ate an entire BIG double chocolate cookie and was fine, although he is probably about fifteen times the size of your dog.

See or contact your vet NOW. It doesn't take a lot of cocoa to kill a chihuahua. You need to take care of the situation and ensure this stuff isn't going to harm your dog.

It won't take much to kill a Chihuahua. Can you go check on her? If she is panting or trembling at all, you need to get her to the vet ASAP.
