I have an indoor dog that has always been terrified of storms. She shakes terribly and dissapears for hours.
My vet gave me Doggie Vicodin to calm her down, which I'm supposed to give her one hour before each storm starts. Has any one had to do this??? And also, is it okay to give it to her after the storm starts?? Storms here just kind of sneek up and i dont want to just give her vicodin everytime it starts to rain or she'll be out of it all the time!! HELP PLEASE!

vicodin? why that? that's a pain med not an anxiety drug. i would think he'd give you Prozac not vicodin!
i think it's a temporary solution but the long term effects on your dog could be harmful. you might wanna try de-sensitization techniques w/her.
it takes time and patience but can help a LOT!
i have a dog that was insanely terrified of thunderstorms and fireworks.
using de-sensitization techniques eliminated the problem.

I would be very careful of all medication that is made for humans. I have heard of dogs being prescribed codeine but not Vicodin. go to the site " PetPlace.com, there you will find every medication that is ok for your little girl. Vicodin is for pain not nerves. It will knock her out so of course the storm will not bother her. But it is hard on her kidneys and other vital organs. This site that I mentioned will answer your question. Also they have Herbal pills that will calm her down. You can find that at www.dr.fostersmith.com. I hope this helps. I have a little Chihuahua that freaks out also. Good luck on finding the right thing that will help your litte girl.

I say get a second opinion!!! Vicodin is for pain not nerves!!! Also they make some OTC doggie valium(herbal) that works pretty well for alot of dogs.

I think what you mean to say is doggie Valium? I'm assuming so, and yes, it is ok to give it after the storm starts, diazepam (doggie valium) starts working in about 20 minutes after ingestion.

i had never heard of this before but i am sure that if the vet gave it to you then it should be just fine. maybe just comfort your dog to ease the terror of storms.

They gave her tramadol for storms?

I would ask for something else.
