It doesn't have anything to do with homophobia whatsoever.

Back in the "good old days"... the term "straight" was generally used to refer to normality in all forms... and references of non-straightness (be that "bent" or "screwed up") to refer to abnormality.
Straight-jackets were made to try and confine and restrict people who were mentally unstable..... which happens to be rather a different kettle of unusual-fish to homosexuality....

The original spelling was "strait" jacket, meaning narrow or confined. Since the APA has declared that homosexuality is not a mental illness, what does this have to do with homosexuality?
