Phil d - I am not knocking your religion - but if I wanted to know more, then surely I would find out for myself - not need to be "told" And surely a skirt is less modest than trousers - ie: you can see flesh under a skirt?!

2007-11-15 02:37:42 · update #2

Krystin: why is it disrespectful for a woman to wear trousers (I was not saying jeans, but then cannot see why someone needs to be formal to preach their beliefs)?

Mr Cal - that is my whole point!
Its THEIR religion (and that is fine) but its not mine!

Brian777 - I don't think for one minute I am being rude - telling someone to **** off is rude!! - I am simply asking a valid question for myself?

Lover of and Jehovah's witness: I am not being rude - and if you want to go down that track, then your fellow JW's are ruder by DECIDING for themselves that I should be TOLD about your faith - I have stayed calm and tried not to upset - but HOW DARE YOU, how dare you assume I need this information - that is my decision and not yours - so you and your JW's are the rude ones in the first instance - if you don't like the way you are treated - don't knock at my door

Jehovah's witnesses believe that they are helping you by going door to door.
They feel that they may be saving your life.
Because they believe that Armageddon is coming and they want to save you.
and the lady's where skirts and dresses because they want to be lady-like.
And present them self's in a nice way.

I was raised a JO HO and left when i was 11.
now 14 years later they still come to my door trying to save me.
i politely say no.

Judging by some of the answers here and the misleading information many have quoted then maybe listening to them wouldn't be a bad idea.

The bible commands Jesus followers to go preach and make disciples. The emphasis is on the word GO. You can't go by sitting on your backside all day.

The wearing of skirts/dresses is just down to local custom as to what is acceptable in that area. It is only in more recent years that women started wearing trousers on formal occasions. But there is a saying 'who wears the trousers in your house?' that indicates that the trousers are worn by whomever is in charge of the household. As JWs believe that the man should be head of the house then it would follow that on such occasion when representing God they would show this in their dress.

Many of you have said about slamming the door, making rude comments etc, then ask why God allows this, why such and such happens. Or claim God does not exist. if you want answers then why not ask when you have the opportunity, and if you firmly believe that God does not exist what are you so scared of by having a conversation?

I am not a JW, but i do know the Bible tells people to go out and try to convert other people, so that's why. Surely if you thought someone would be granted eternal life in an eternal paradise if they came round to your view as opposed to ceasing to exist completely if they didn't hear your perspective, you'd do anything you could to save them, wouldn't you? To me it seems just the same as saving someone from a fatal accident. The only question is, is that the best way to do it?

I am very happy when JWs visit because i want to persuade them they are wrong, for the same reason they want to persuade me that I am. I know a lot of JWs and have a lot of respect for them. They are dedicated, principled and really know what they are talking about, but they are wrong.

I can't say i've noticed if JW women only wear skirts, but if that's so i imagine it's because they believe in traditional gender roles.

If it bothers you, you can ask to be put on a list saying not to call.

Because they believe both acts to be scriptural. The early disciples were commanded to go from 'door to door' and JW's believe that they too need to do this to fulfill the prophecy that 'the good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the nations and then the end will come' (Math 24:14) They also believe that they are the only ones following the commandments of Jesus when he said 'Go, therefore and make disciples of all the nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (Mathew 28:19, sadly they seem to forget that the message of Christianity was spread long before their organisation was even a twinkle in the eye of Satan. JW's believe that they can win their salvation through such witnessing work. 1 Timothy 4:16 says 'Pay constant attention to yourself and to your teaching. stay by these things, for by doing this you will save both yourself and your listener'. They would do well to listen to other words of Jesus and of Paul when they warned that before the end comes many will be misled by false teachers and false prophets. Mathew 24:24, 'For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will give great signs and wonders so as to mislead, if possible, even the chosen ones, (25) Look! I have forewarned you.'
I can't remember where the scripture is that says about clothing but it says something like 'let not you men be dressing like women, nor women like men'. Unfortunately as with many things they translate it too literally, some scholars believe it refered to transvestite behaviour, and any way, Jesus wore a dress! Clothing is cultural and in many places women routinely wear trousers and men dresses of a sort.

I'm a Buddhist who wouldn't mind it at all if a Jehovah's witness came to my door and we could have a little conversation. One time a JW came to my door and I told him I'd read his material if he read one of my books. He agreed, and when he came back later, he had my book with all sorts of pieces of paper in the book with written comments. He actually read my book and gave it some thought! I was impressed! Unfortunately, I was on my way to work, so I didn't have a chance to sit down and talk with the guy, but I would have liked to. Why not? Why should I be afraid of being converted or indulge in being annoyed by them?

Matthew 28:19,20 gives us Jesus final command to GO make disciples, etc.

Acts 20:20 tells us that the early christians preached in the
market places and from door to door

Jehovah's Witnesses strive to live by these instructions.

And the women do wear slacks, jeans etc. just not to the meetings. It is more out of respect for those members of our community who feel it is wrong for women to wear pants to "church". Besides, it's a sight better than the worn out jeans and tank tops I've seen worn by people I've seen walking into church.

Dear "nickynoodle33":

Jesus foretold for our day this work: “This good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come.” He also instructed his followers: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of people of all the nations.”—Matt. 24:14; 28:19.

When Jesus sent out his early disciples, he directed them to go to the homes of the people. (Matthew 10:7, 11-13.) The apostle Paul said regarding his ministry: “I did not hold back from telling you any of the things that were profitable nor from teaching you publicly and from house to house.”—Acts 20:20, 21; see also Acts 5:42.

The message that the Witnesses proclaim involves the lives of people; they want to be careful to miss no one. (Zephaniah 2:2, 3.) Their calls are motivated by love—first for God, also for their neighbor.

women wear skirts because its respectful... would you wear jeans to a wedding???

Jesus preached the same way, and we are followers of jesus.. why wouldn't we try to be like him and do the same thing?

"he went journeying from city to city and from village to village, preaching and declaring the good news of the kingdom of God." His early disciples did likewise. (Luke 8:1; 9:1-6; 10:1-9)

Acts 5:41, 42.
41 These, therefore, went their way from before the San´he·drin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy to be dishonored in behalf of his name. 42 And every day in the temple and from house to house they continued without letup teaching and declaring the good news about the Christ, Jesus.

Matthew10:7 As YOU go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of the heavens has drawn near.’

"this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations."—Matthew 24:14;

Matthew 28:19, 20.
19 Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded YOU. And, look! I am with YOU all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.”

if you have any more questions i'd be happy to answer them.

I think you have a few different religions mixed up. Mormons go door to door. Penticostal women where long skirts. Some fundamentalist mormons also where skirts so I am guess ing you are talking about Mormons...? It does get annoying when they are knocking on your door all the time.
