You don't have to be gullible so much as susceptible to brainwashing, which is much more effective at roping in victims, even those who normally wouldn't be so "gullible" as to fall for a scam.

To be blunt, Scientology is a cult. It employs semi-legitimate psychotherapy & self-help methods to keep people loyal & convinced of its merit while it simultaneously sucks them dry financially & attempts to keep them far away from ANYONE, even friends & family, who would dissuade them from remaining in such a harmful situation. It bullies all known critics, opponents, “enemies”, etc, often through malicious litigation & character assassination. It’s a particularly greedy as well as manipulative & dangerous cult that takes its anti-psychiatry fanaticism to deadly limits.

Well DUH!
It sounds like you are reading the anti-scientology sites. By their descriptions of what it is then the only members would be raving retards.

But then again, thats like asking how anyone can join a religion that does ritualistic symbolic eating of flesh and drinking of blood and drowning babies while following the words of a 2000 year gone magical zombie carpenter. AND it "requests" 10% of your earnings before taxes to fund their super city in europe with its own army.

The point of view makes a big difference? :-) Its called propoganda dude. Its worded specifically to make you go "**** how can anyone believe this?!?". Dont be such a sheep and follow with the word-herd. Take a doubting view when you are reading something whether its good or bad about it.

From what I UNDERSTAND of scientology its all self-help courses researched by a scifi writer (they do tend to be good researchers) back in the 50's. The "belief" stuff people post is all "secret known only to the top members" so most scientologists dont believe any of that even if it is true.

When I first read dianetics I did not know who L. Ron Hubbard was. When I first saw his picture I had doubts .
But when I read it . It made sense. Dianetics states that there is part of your mind that that reacts irrationally, and this is somewhat true , but most people not being an expert on psychology miss the falseness of it, so get suckerd in to it.
You have to understand that a lot of scientologist are very smart. I am the smartest one in my family, but I was the "stupid one" who fell for it.
By the way I am out of scientology and see the danger of it first hand.
