It is a deficiency in other ways to self-soothe.
Some chew their fingernails, some drink, some eat, some scream and cry. You chew on yourself.
You REPLACE a habit with a new one that interferes with the old one.
For instance, There is nasty stuff you can put on your fingers to prevent you from putting them near your mouth-and they hurt your eyes, too.
You can put a rubber band on your wrist and every time you catch yourself doing it, snap your wrist, and say ouch.
Or get your nails done. Spend $50 of your hard-earned money to have beautiful nails, and it will remind you not to chew. (tastes terrible and and is POISONOUS!)
Go to the dentist and have the dentist charge you $200 to repair the enamel that you are damaging by chewing.
Sit on your hands. All the time.
Teach yourself other ways to soothe your anxiety, like meditating, exercising, giving yourself a foot massage, sexing up your neighbor or petting your cat.

You can have look at your skin which at the tip of fingers under microscope and you will find many germs, May be this will put you off.
Other wise you can try techniques like putting scotch tape on a finger , one finger at a time until the skin grows again.
You can also put some thing bitter on your fingers so that due to the taste you will quit biting.

If you have had it all your life it will be hard to get rid of it permanently. You have it embedded in your brain . It is the sort of thing autistic people do. they do certain things to calm their nerves in reaction to stress. I am a nail biter. I have stopped at times but most of the time I am doing it. To stop I have to manicure and really try hard. In your case you need some cuticle clippers and cuticle oil and to keep it manicured. Also you need to find things to do with nervous energy. If you quit for a time it is easy to go back to it so it is a life long battle probably. It can be overcome though if you really want to.

What you can do is "wrap up the tips of your fingers with Bandaid or Handyplast or other adhesive plasters".
Also, eat with spoon .Don't use your fingers for eating.
Fingers are to be used just to hold spoon or fork firmly.Practise for atleast two months. You will get rid of your bad habit. In any case, eating with spoon/fork is more scientific and safe.
Goodluck.
