all you need is one MetroCard, which is a thin plastic card the size of a credit card. when you take the subway, you swipe the card as you are entering the turnstile, and when it says "GO", you walk right through. when you take the bus, you dip the card into the machine next to the driver, and the machine spits the card back out to you, and the driver will also tell you if the card is no good. both these machines tell you how much you have left, but you have to read them quickly. if your card is invalid at the turnstile, the turning mechanism will stay locked. there are also stand-alone card readers in subway stations that will tell you if your card is still valid and how much you have left. the card itself will tell you how to swipe it.
if you are staying for up to a week, you can do either of the following:
1. buy a 7-day unlimited ride card for $24. it will be valid until midnight of the 7th day after you first *use*(not *buy*) the card. you can "hop on" and "hop off" anytime you want and not have to think about it. if you take more than 14 complete one-way rides on the subway, bus, or both, the unlimited card will have paid for itself. if you like the idea of riding anytime and anywhere, then the unlimited is the way to go.
2. buy a Pay-Per-Ride card from $4 to $80. i would recommend buying a minimum amount of $10, because you will get a $2 bonus for every $10 you spend, that is, 6 complete one-way rides for the price of 5.
if you can plan your trips around town and only take the bus or subway when you need to, i would recommend the Pay-Per-Ride, because that will save you money. and what i mean by need to is if you are going from Midtown to Wall Street, or Manhattan to Brooklyn; otherwise, if you are touring within 1-2 miles of your starting point, the best thing to do is walk. i don't find it a good idea to take the subway only one stop if it would take just as long to walk.
also, remember that as long as you stay within the subway system, you can ride anywhere for as long as you want. as soon as you go out and come back in again it will register as a new ride, especially if you have a Pay-Per-Ride. you should also remember that you can transfer free within 2 hours between the subway and bus, and between 2 busses.
one little trick i use if i'm using a Pay-Per-Ride is to figure out if there is a bus going back to or near to my starting point, take the subway to my destination, and within 2 hours take the bus back, all on one fare!
have a nice trip!

NJ Transit does not accept Metro Card. The 319 bus to Atlantic City costs $29.85 each way. It also takes over 3 1/2 hours. For that price, you can take the ACES train. All coach tickets are $29 and it only takes 2 hours and 40 minutes. Plus the ACES train also has complimentary shuttle service to The Borgata, Harrah's, and Caesar's. A better bet if you're only going for the day and are over 21 would be to consider a casino bus. Most of these charge around $20-$30 round trip and give you cash back when you get there.

You can buy a pay per ride metro card, where you put say $10 on the card, and use it as you need. This also gives you discounted fares.
See : http://www.mta.info/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm.
Another good (though tacky!) way to get around is to use a hop-on hop-off bus. More expensive ($25 ish) but ticket lasts a whole day and you get to see the sights. If it's really cold, i'd recommend you use one with its roof on!
For a free ride (and there aren't many of those in NYC!) try the Staten Island Ferry from near the world trade center site. Takes you past the Statue of Liberty and back, for nothing!
Have a great trip!

you can purchase unlimited metrocards to ride the subway in nyc. the prices for the unlimited are: $7 for a fun pass (its only 24 hours), $24 for the weekly unlimited, and $76 for the monthly unlimited metrocards.
A regular metrocard is $2 one way. If you buy a $10 metrocard, you will get a free ride, $20 will get you 2 free rides, etc. Your best bet is to get the unlimited. its worth the money spent and you can ride the subways as many times and not worry about replenshing; with the regular metrocard you have to worry about replenishing the card.
as for metronorth and lirr, they also have weekly passes but they vary in prices. go to www.mta.info for their prices.
hope this answer your question.

You can pay every time or you can get a metro card for the train, it's easier to get the card because there can tend to be a lot of people around and this way they dont see your money or where you keep it, i'm not sure on the current price but it's not all that expensive

Great ideas however, I recommend that under no circumstacnes do you accept rides/offers from NON-yellow cabs. They can sometimes prey on tourists
