More traditional for a bathroom I would have thought, as travertine would have to be really well sealed to prevent staining from oils etc that you are likely to find in a typical kitchen.

As well as the above statements Travertine is a relatively soft tile and will mark much more easily that something with a glazed finish.

Stains are a problem for Travertine. In a kitchen, you will have oil in the air that will make them quite slippery. Use a good sealer to prevent stains and clean often.
