...I don't believe in this war (war for oil as I see it!). I am thinking about joining either the Coast Guard or the Navy. Can anyone tell me which is better to be in? Which has the least likly chance of being sent to the middle east? I want to protect America, my home, not serve for the big oil companies over seas! What is the best branch to go into for someone like me?

No branch of the service or the Coast Guard would be good for you or you for them. When you join the military you do not have a choice on what war or conflict you go to and your personal opinion on why it is being fought is immaterial. The Coast Guard is not a military service but can be called into military duty or personnel assigned to duty with the Navy so it would not work either. Join the Peace Corps or Volunteer America and let people who serve the country without buts or conditions join the military.

Someone like you would be better off in the Coast Guard. Yes there's a slight chance you may be sent to the middle east, I know because I've flown them over there and back. But not as much as the Navy.

Don't ruin a chance of a lifetime by this war. War is going to happen regardless if you join or not and just like every other job their are task we do that we do and don't like being a part of. Whether you join us over here depends on what job you want to do. From my experience now, it is hot as hell, lonely and depressing in IRaq. But on the flip side, I am earning my college education, saving money through a savings plan, learning Spanish and not paying taxes. The military is not for everyone. Do some extensive research before signing the line. My sister is in the Navy right now and she is loving it being on the beach in California and I am in the Army talking to her through emails from Iraq. My brother who is a Marine is happy but may come over here. There are beautiful parts to Iraq that the news does not show and some parts look like crap. I don't see many coast guardsmen here so do more research. There are days when I work my butt off and others when I play video games so its not all 100% bad.

Funny how so many posters here gave you advice, but cannot spell or structure a sentence or do not know the correct usage of the words "there", "they're" and "their"....geez...
My husband was in the Navy and did some of his reserves with the Coast Guard (we live and are from coastal NC)...where the Coast Guard brings one of it's boats, The Dilligence" into our port (Wilmington, NC)...they are at sea months at a time...
Even though no one "likes" war, and many believe we shouldn't be over there..have forgotten Sept. 11th and the threat to our country.....I am so PROUD of the men and women who have CHOSEN to serve our country to ensure our FREEDOM....and I applaud you for thinking about serving. It is an unselfish sacrifice. Don't believe those who tell you you can't get a job being military...I know for a FACT it will ENHANCE your chances with future employers. It may have turned in a "war for oil" but it is ALSO about protecting our country.
Go speak with recruiters at both the Navy and Coast Guard.
Then, make your decision. My husband spent 11 years in the Navy. He is so very proud of his service and so am I. Although there was no conflict going on during his time of service (70's and early 80's)....he still came away with a WONDERFUL education that he could not have gotten anywhere else...and I don't mean education as in school..I mean education in team work, love of country, travel, working for a common goal and the common good, respect for others-not only shipmates- but for people of different countries, how to handle stress and emergencies, and came away with a renewed sense of patriotism.
Serving in ANY branch of the military would NOT be serving an oil company...you will be protecting the freedoms our country strives to keep..and thousands before you gave their lives so that we could remain free....

Every branch deploys to the Middle East, Coast Guard included. I'm not sure how many actually go, but they do patrol the Persian Gulf. If you don't believe in the war don't join.

War for oil !!! That is working so well that we are paying over $3 a gallon for gas, and trying to get opec to sell us more. If this was a war for oil we would be using the Iraqi oil and not worry about opec.
From the sounds of it the coast guard would be the best bet.

During periods of war the Coast Guard is placed under the operational direction of the Department of Defense.

You are not suited to serve in the military. Your misguided statement that the war is on the behalf of oil companies is your clue. You remind me of the people that worked for me and were in the National Guard. When they would get called up for their two weeks of training, they would ask for a letter declaring that they would cause an undue hardship on the business by being away for two weeks. I always thought it odd that they had no problem cashing their checks from the Guard, but didn't feel that they needed to earn it.

Coast Guard, but I do not recommend any Branch of Military to you at all if you're worried about Dieing, Deployment and Arguable War Politics that could impair how you act in a War you could be deployed to .

Join the Salvation Army.

The US military doesn't need you.

There are no non deployable services.

About 50% of the Navy had deployed in support of Iraq so far.

Not sure the percentage for the Coast Guard, but they deploy also.
