the last atv I had was a Honda 110 3-wheeler, which lasted 19 years, until it was stolen while I was overseas!

I'm deciding between a honda rancher AT (air cooled, auto transmission) and a rancher TRX 420FE (manual shift, bigger engine, liquid cooled, $500 cheaper)

I believe it doesn't matter. Honda's and Yamaha's are the most dependable on the market, if you stick with one of those I doubt you'll have trouble out of either and both will work efficiently, no matter air cooled or liquid cooled.

There sure seems to be a lot of discussion here and reasons why one is better. I currently have a Polaris Sportsman 500 which is liquid cooled. Both son's have and I have owned in the past air cooled ATV's as well. Both function well and have effectively kept the engines cooled properly, with the following exceptions.

The air cooled does not stay cool is idling for long periods of time. They also have problems cooling if the motor fins are covered with mud which we occasionally seem to find. (alright we go looking for deep mud) My son actually blew up his when the motor and fins were caked and dried up while riding.

I say buy what you can afford as they are all pretty reliable short of abusing them too bad. Of course you wouldn't be buying an ATV if you didn't want to get out and explore the outdoors (abuse) and follow trails (abuse) or do work around the house or farm (abuse), so enjoy.

Same problem applies to two wheelers. The only times it REALLY matters:

- When something breaks, liquid cooled components are much more expensive to replace.
- A breakdown in the woods, air is easier to make limp home than liquid.

6 in one hand, 12-6 in the other.

I would go with the bigger engine for 500 less personally.

Either one works just as well as the other. Some ATV's (Yamaha's Big Bears) are air/liquid cooled. I would base my decision on something other than the cooling type. The technology is so advanced with both types now that both will give you nearly the same performance.

I have owned both in the past and neither one of them has ever given me trouble.

For me it would be the liquid cooled manual, but more for the bigger engine and manual transmission. If you can drive manual properly they will last forever. I think liquid cooling is a lot more reliable than an automatic transmission.

get the Liquid cooled, you dont have to worry about the engine over heating if you are sitting still for a while.... or moving too slow through the woods....

A liquid cooled engine is always better because they are more efficient and they keep them more cool.

I prefer water cooled, but it depends on how you ride. Air cooled atvs are just as good and no radiator to bust. Welcome to the club, my old Suzuki 250r was stolen too. Most likely by one of my relatives.

air cooled-can't give you specifics but when my husband bought his new motorcycle he debated between the ups and downs of air or liquid cool and air won
