Nothing much to see or do in New Jersey. No big cities except Newark and good luck there, you will need it. New Jersey has better beaches and thats about it.
New York has everything you could want. It would take years to see everything you liked in NYC alone. There are also beaches , mountains and rivers, tons of other stuff as well. I have lived in both places and I would have to say
no contest:
NEW YORK!

"We take the perspective that the real competition is not within the region, but is actually the New York metro area vs. the Los Angeles or Atlanta metro area. And in fact the competition is not even that anymore; it's Hong Kong, it's London. We'd rather have the businesses stay within the New York metro area, and that includes New Jersey and Connecticut, than see them go elsewhere in the world."

I lived in Northern NJ my whole life. I like it because it is near to NYC, plenty of malls, close enough to the Jersey shore, some nice neighborhoods. Some of the things I don't like....it is overcrowded, taxes are high, people are rude, etc.....I plan on moving eventually.
I lived in upstate NY when I went to college. It was a nice area....more parks and stuff than NJ. It is definitely more affordable up there. But once you get like 40 minutes from Albany it starts getting a little too hick for me and a little boring.

I would say New Jersey, because not only your close to New York(the only con is the traffic of getting there), but you get to see something different.

New Jersey. If you got rid of "New" and said you were going to "Jersey", people knoow what you mean but if you said you were going to "York" they would wonder WTF you are talking about.
