I've never really thought about it so would be really grateful if you could shed some light on why. Thanks in advance.

I am a Catholic, but I think I can answer your question. The athiests don't believe in God, because they cannot see Him and to them seeing is believing! We also cannot see God, But blessed are those who cannot see and yet believe. God is like the wind, you cannot see that neither, but you know it is there! One can see God in everything around you, the heavens and all the beauty on earth!

"[Our] biggest fallacies about God are:

1. God needs something.
2. God can fail to get what God needs.
3. God has separated you from God because you have not given God what God needs.
4. God still needs what God needs so badly that God now requires you, from your separated position, to provide it.
5. God will destroy you if you do not meet God's requirements.

[Whereas] this is what God is actually like:

1. Tomorrow's God does not require anyone to believe in God.
2. Tomorrow's God is without gender, size, shape, color, or any of the characteristics of an individual living being.
3. Tomorrow's God talks with everyone, all the time.
4. Tomorrow's God is separate from nothing, but is Everywhere Present, the All in All, the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the Sum Total of Everything that ever was, is now, and ever shall be.
5. Tomorrow's God is not a singular Super Being, but the extraordinary process called Life.
6. Tomorrow's God is ever changing.
7. Tomorrow's God is needless.
8. Tomorrow's God does not ask to be served, but is the Servant of all of Life.
9. Tomorrow's God will be unconditionally loving, nonjudgmental, noncondemning, and nonpunishing.

Taken collectively, those differences will produce a strikingly different form of spirituality, which in turn will produce a strikingly different form of life, a different way of being with each other. "

Okay, I'm an atheist, and here's how I see it-
Throughout history, people have credited a god or gods with whatever couldn't be explained. As science progressed, though, we found valid explanations for phenomena previously credited to deities.
The sky fills with black clouds? God is angry, so we must sacrifice a virgin.
Now, meteorological science can explain exactly what causes a storm.
Earthquake? God is pissed- sacrifice a virgin.
Now, though, we know that it's tectonic shifting.
At this point, a god or gods are credited with only three (as of yet) unanswerable questions:
1. Where did sentient life in the universe begin?
2. What happens when we die?
3. How can anyone possibly find Dane Cook funny?

I used to be a believer, but I felt my faith becoming weak so I decided to bolster it by looking for evidence of Jesus as "there is more evidence for Jesus than Cesar". Much to my surprise, I found out that this quote that we hear so much was totally wrong and at best it wouldn't be surprising if Jesus had existed, but it there is no direct evidence for it. I tried the same thing with the Exodus, with even worse results, there simply is no evidence of any of the events from Joseph to Moses, a period of over 200 years.

To make a long story short, I found no evidence of any miraculous event recorded by the bible, and an overwhelming amount of evidence, including transitional fossils, for evolution. My conclusion is that the bible is like any other myth and god doesn't exist.

God is an outdated Idea.
Created by a more simple minded people to deal with
the many mysteries of the planet they did not understand,
And is still used today by simple minded people
to deal with the many mysteries that they do not understand.

You want proof That "God" didn't create man in his own image?
(Which disproves the Basis of most any Religion)

Just Google the word "Evolution"

With all we now know about our planets history and our own
Evolution, The better question would be
Why do you believe in God?

Different thought process here for now; Perhaps the weakness is not with the atheists in this country, but with the 'Christians' not obeying(applying) what Christ said in Matt. 18:16, and Paul said in 2 Cor.13:1, along with 2 Tim. 3:16-17. If you do not understand them and the disobedience of them; email me soon!

Because religion is the source of all evil, why do you think there are so many wars in the world because of people who disagree with others religion. For example in Iraq and afganistan - the sunni and the shai, the extremist Al-Qaeda ... ww2 the nazis, then theres the war with the catholic and protestants...these are all religion based wars, I know some of them have other factors like greed.. but when it comes down to its all about religion. Its happening today but the question is why do people believe in god and religion when it just causes greif in the world. Why can't people believe in themselves instead of believeing in "god" to show them the way? I mean people who have low self esteem turn to god to give them hope, but does he really give you hope or is it just your determination to get you through tough times? I use to believe in god but I don't know why I did, now my life is so much better, now I don't have religion.

Other religions say that other gods exist, most have been discarded as mythology and the lack of evidence for the remaining ones remains non-existent.

I don't merely not believe in your god, I don't believe in any god, and I believe that gods are purely fictional beings created to anthropomorphise and explain previously unexplainable phenomena.

Hope this helps you out.

Personally, I don't believe in god due to the fact that I haven't been given any conclusive proof other than "You have to have faith".

Also, I heard a statistic that 95% of Scientists don't believe in god. And Scientists, last time I checked, are some of the smartest people in the world.

But the only thing I hate about being an atheist is the way people look at us. They act like every atheist HATES religion and HATES religious people. The way I see it, I have my views, you have yours, and that is alright with me.

I'm not and atheist, I'm Agnostic i don't believe in god because there is no supporting evidence.

I will accept that there is a god out there but no one has proved to me that there is a god nor ever was a god
